Global Outreach Ministry to Liberia
The Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey is encouraging Churches to participate in the Global Outreach Ministry to Liberia. Currently, the Ministry has embarked on a project, co-sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, called “Empowering the Liberian Church and People Through Outreach.” This Ministry seeks to provide material and relief assistance that will help to rebuild and empower the Episcopal Church of Liberia, its schools and institutions, and other needy Liberians. Target beneficiaries include, but are not limited to the most vulnerable, under-served, and marginalized children, low-income women, students, orphans, the elderly, the lame/cripple, the blind, churches, clergy, seminaries, colleges, schools, etc.
Former slaves from the United States founded Liberia in the early 1800s. It is a constitutional democracy with a capitalist economy. The Episcopal Church of Liberia was established by the American Episcopal Church in 1836 and was a missionary district of that church until 1982 when it joined the Church of the Province of West Africa. Currently, there is a Covenant relationship between The Episcopal Church USA and the Episcopal Church of Liberia.
Shoe Collection
St. Martin’s Outreach Committee had determined earlier this year to do a shoe collection to aid Soles4Souls. However, due to the Bishop’s request that we participate in this Global Ministry, Outreach has decided to collect new and used shoes from now until June 19th for this Ministry. Shoes, of all sizes, male and female, are one of the requested items by the Global Ministry. They can be dress or casual, flip-flops, tennis shoes, etc. In addition, they are collecting new socks. If shoes have laces, please tie the pair together with the laces. If there are buckles, please buckle the two shoes together. All other pairs can be placed in bags (1, 2, or 3 pairs per bag). There is a bin at the back of the narthex. If you have many pairs, please contact Kathy Shanklin or Marlene Ficzko and they will make arrangements to pick up your shoes.
Thank you to all our donors and would be donors. Your donations will help improve the lives of Liberians, in both church and state. And remember to ask any family members or friends if they have shoes to donate.

INTRODUCING THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Every week in Lent we’ll be introducing two Stations in the Stations of the Cross. All together the Stations are a series of images of events from Jesus’ journey on the day of his crucifixion. Each station relates an event from that journey. Christians have been walking the Stations for centuries. It is meant to assist us as we make our own spiritual pilgrimage of contemplation of our Lord’s passion. The images here are from a set of 14 icons recently given to St Martin’s in memory of Gloribel Ayala.
We hope you will join us at the Church at Noon on Good Friday to walk the Stations of the Cross as you contemplate the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
THE THIRTEENTH STATION: THE BODY OF JESUS IS PLACED IN THE ARMS OF HIS MOTHER
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
All you who pass by, behold and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow. My eyes are spent weeping; my soul is in tumult; my heart is poured out in grief because of the downfall of my people. “Do not call me Naomi (which means Pleasant), call me Mara (which means Bitter); for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.”
Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies’ sake. Amen.
THE FOURTEENTH STATION: JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb.
Let us pray. O God, your blessed Son was laid in a tomb in a garden, and rested on the Sabbath day: Grant that we who have been buried with him in the waters of baptism may find our perfect rest in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
