FROM THE DIRECTOR
Fall is here and it’s time to get cozy!

The Danish word Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is said to have no direct translation in English, although “cozy” comes close. Defined by The Oxford English Dictionary as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being, regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture”.

Hygge can mean something different to everyone as it suggests a general sense of comfort, calm, simplicity, and community. Summarized succinctly in The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection, hygge is just “a practical way of creating sanctuary in the middle of very real life.”

As we enter the month of October, leaves change color, home fireplaces start to crackle, and warm lattes and pastries are savored, Fall might be considered one of the most hygge times of year. So, how can the Library help you learn more and embrace this cozy lifestyle for yourself? Check out some of these titles the next time you visit us:

WHAT WE'RE READING

Daniel Goldin from Boswell Book Company recommended Circe to me, and I finally got around to it – it is so good! Miller’s mythological fiction follows minor Greek goddess Circe as she lives on the island of Aeaea in exile. Unfortunately, Circe didn’t understand the full strength of her power at first, but in banishment, she is able to hone in her skills of taming beasts, changing drunken sailors into swine, and holding off the gods from hurting her son, Telegonus. Incorporating several legendary events, Circe is a fresh take on Greek lore told from the female perspective.

Fargo meets Olive Kitteridge in this slightly dark debut novel set in Maine. Everyone in Damariscotta, Maine is wondering how Ed and Steph Thatch came to be so rich and powerful in this peaceful coastal town. But no one wants to ask the hard questions, preferring to assume that the lobster business really is doing as well as Ed says it is. Told through the lens of Andrew, who grew up with Ed and has relocated his family back to Maine to teach, we see the genesis, and consequences, of the Thatch family fortune.

When sharpshooter Margaret Welty spots the legendary hala, a mystical foxlike creature, she vows to enter the town's hunt for the creature. Then, hopeful alchemist Weston Winters appears on Margaret’s doorstep, and she allows him to stay on one condition: he must join her in the hunt.
Tensions build as the pair train together and uncover the dark magic that nearly killed Margaret’s mother, all while the hala continues to terrorize the town.

Atmospheric and moody, this young adult romantic fantasy is perfect for fans of gothic fiction.
