Light It Up! For National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Today, Thursday, October 21st is the third Thursday in October, and the country will be lit up blue and purple in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

The Essex County Library - Leamington Branch and Amherstburg's Town Hall are recognizing NDEAM by lighting it up purple and blue. As well, the Town of LaSalle is posting the event on their social media and town hall signage.

60 for 60 Anniversary Raffle a Success!

The Community Living Essex County 60 for 60 Anniversary Raffle draw was held on the evening of our virtual 60th Anniversary celebrations on September 9th. A total of 1,200 raffle tickets were sold and $15,244 raised.

The raffle was not only a successful fundraiser but was also part of our year long 60th Anniversary celebrations. A special thanks goes out to Nor-Built Construction, Maidstone IDA and Ernie’s TV for their support as corporate sponsors of the raffle.

As family members of individuals with intellectual disabilities we are very aware of the need to communicate effectively. This is a skill we have mastered through trial and error. Many of us deal with individuals with limited verbal skills. During the pandemic our kids are spending long hours confined to their home base and everyone’s coping strategies are being tested. What message are we sending via our body language as we attempt to adjust to the “new normal“? How can we better project a positive message?

Free Webinar: Legal Guide to Engaging Private Support Workers
Community Living Ontario is teaming up with PooranLaw to host another webinar on the Legal Guide to Engaging Support Workers For People With Disabilities.

This session is intended to accompany and guide the audience through CLO's new e-book - Inspiring Possibilities: Legal Guide to Engaging Private Support Workers.

This session will include an introduction to the Legal Guide and will highlight key takeaways from each chapter and the resources that are included in the guide. The audience will learn about important legal issues related to paying support workers, including:
  • funding sources;
  • understanding the differences between employees and "independent contractors";
  • best practices for hiring workers;
  • key rules for managing support workers;
  • health and safety and human rights issues;
  • insurance and taxation considerations; and
  • special rules related to live-in support workers.

Halloween Game - Toilet Paper Mummy
This toilet paper game is loads of fun, it’s sure to have everyone laughing like crazy! The way the game works, is you have multiple teams of 3 (one mummy, 2 wrappers) the team that finishes their roll of toilet paper first, wins!
Fish Fry
Help support the Essex Region Goodfellows at a drive-thru fish fry on Friday, October 22nd from 4:30 to 7:00 pm, taking place at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Essex. Cost is $15/person for a delicious pickerel dinner, hosted by the Essex Knights of Columbus.
