NEW EDITORIAL
BY DEBORAH MACNAMARA, PHD

Back to school … here we go again …
It's looking like back to school is going to be much more like last year than we had hoped. Dr. Deborah MacNamara had written an excellent article for last year's re-entry that we never got a chance to publish. We asked her permission to re-publish her article "Leading our Children Back to School" for our back to school newsletter entry this year, as it seems as appropro as ever.

Re-entry has begun and we are now preparing to return to parts of our lives, like work and schooling, without knowing exactly what this looks like. How do we lead our children? What do they need from us? Can they adapt to the new realities of social distancing at schools and will this create anxiety and emotional problems for them? These are just a few of the questions I have been asked by parents but center around the question of – how do I lead my child(ren) back to school?

Will our kids feel safe?
Safety is an illusion and telling our children that they won’t get covid, or that we won’t get covid is not the best way to make them feel safe. Safety has much less to do with their surroundings and more to do with their connection to adults. Assuring our children that they will be ‘okay’ is far less effective when it comes to feeling secure than making sure they feel taken care of by us. In order to understand why this is so we will need to understand something about attachment and why it matters to kids.

Children are not able to take care of themselves and they can’t make sense of the world like an adult does. It is their dependency on adults that makes them feel secure as they look to them for protection, guidance, and direction. The relationship with an adult is like an emotional bubble that preserves the child’s heart. When a child is afraid, frustrated, or overwhelmed, it is this relational bubble that can provide a safe place to retreat to. Home is where the heart is, and we need our children to give their hearts to us for safe keeping....TO READ THE REST OF THIS EDITORIAL, CLICK HERE →

This Solutions to Sleep 3-part webinar panel series provides follow-up support for Dr. Neufeld's free presentation on Getting Bedtime Right (see Free Resource section below for the link).

Getting bedtime right is important. By what is evidenced online, millions of parents are attempting to do just that but are frequently getting advice that has not been informed by what is truly in the child's best interests.

As a leading articulator of the attachment-based developmental approach, Dr. Neufeld makes sense of bedtime through the lenses of attachment and emotion, providing a conceptual foundation for addressing these issues in a way that does not interfere with secure relationships, healthy functioning and the unfolding of potential.

The science of bedtime is laid out in his Getting Bedtime Right address. In this upcoming three-part series of webinar panels, Gordon is joined by Deborah MacNamara and Tamara Strijack to build upon these foundational insights with practical support, stories, illustrations and examples.

Registration is open now and is ongoing.
A 1.5 HOUR RECORDED PRESENTATION
GETTING BEDTIME RIGHT
by GORDON NEUFELD, PH.D.
Getting bedtime right is a big deal! It sets the stage for both parents and children for dealing with the myriad of separations a child faces in life. Of course, as we all know, sleep and bedtime problems can plague us at any age. Addressing them is much easier when there is an understanding of the issues involved.

This presentation is now available on our Free Resources page or by clicking the video link here. This presentation is the anchor for the follow-up Solutions to Sleep 3-part webinar series in November 2021 (see above to register).
Our IDEA Centre for Educators website is celebrating its 1st birthday! If you haven't visited before, or it's been awhile, please stop by! This centre exists to bring together educators interested in how developmental science can be applied by those caring for children and youth in a variety of settings.

These five-minute conversational videos are intended to be easily accessible and bite-sized .... just enough to get you re-thinking the extraordinary value of play.

We are DELIGHTED to launch the Neufeld Scientific Research Centre website! This project was established in order to popularize the science behind the relational developmental approach as articulated by Dr. Gordon Neufeld and the Neufeld Institute.

Here we collect the results of already published scientific research on specific topics that relational developmental psychology deals with. We hope, that thanks to our activities, the availability of knowledge about the relational developmental approach will increase both in the scientific world, as well as with specialists and students.
