TOP STORY

Open the Door to Palm Sunday and Holy Week

On April 13, Armenian Churches worldwide will observe Palm Sunday, the feast of Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week—the sacred commemoration of the dramatic events leading to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, his victory over death, and the redemption of humanity and the fallen world. The church re-enacts these episodes in the days leading up to Easter.

On this day, the altar curtain, which remained closed throughout Great Lent, will be re-opened with the special Turen-Patzek (“door-opening”) service. Click here to view a Bread & Salt video episode about this meaningful service, titled “Doors of Mercy.”

The days that immediately precede and follow Palm Sunday feature services that resonate with Bible stories recounting the final days of Christ’s earthly ministry.

Prayer of the week

Open to us, O Lord, the door of your mercy, and make us worthy of your dwellings of light together with your saints. Receive us also, O Savior, into your mansions prepared for your saints, and inscribe our names in the Book of Life. O formidable judge, when you sit in the judgment seat, spare your creatures through the intercession and prayers of the holy ascetics.

Keep watch, Lord, over your faithful people; strengthen those fleeing persecution, and protect the holy soil of Armenia. Preserve the spirit of Artsakh in our hearts; console those who grieve; deliver your faithful children from conflict, and bestow your peace on all mankind. Amen.

Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan Receives the "Dzaghga Pilon" Honor

On Tuesday, April 7, during the annual Mid-Atlantic Clergy Retreat at St. Stepanos Church in Elberon, NJ, our pastor, Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan, was formally vested with the “Dzaghga Pilon” (Floral Phelonion)—a distinguished honor granted by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians.

This distinction, symbolizing faithful and exemplary service in the Armenian Church, was officially presented by Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan on behalf of His Holiness.

Originally conferred on the occasion of the Feast of the Sts. Ghevontiantz, the honor recognizes Fr. Hovsep’s many years of devoted ministry, leadership, and pastoral care—qualities that continue to strengthen the spiritual life of our parish and the broader Armenian Church.

Lenten Journey: Walking with Christ – Preparing for Holy Week

On Wednesday, April 9, St. Mary Armenian Church concluded its Lenten Journey 2025 series with an evening themed “Walking with Christ: Preparing for Holy Week,” inspired by the words of our Lord in Luke 9:23 – “Take up your cross and follow me.”

The evening began with the Rest Hour service. Following the service Dr. Zaven Kalayjian led the final presentation of the series, offering a meditation on the meaning of following Christ and being His disciples. He invited participants to enter Holy Week not just as observers, but as active followers of Christ’s Passion—carrying our own crosses with faith, humility, and love, reminding everyone that the journey to the Resurrection begins with surrender and spiritual readiness.

Following the reflection, attendees gathered in the church hall for a Lenten dinner hosted by St. Mary Gift Stor committee members and friends.

As we now prepare our hearts for Holy Week and the Resurrection, we do so strengthened by the shared experiences of these weeks and the call to walk with Christ in faith and hope.

Fr. Nersess Celebrates His First Badarak

On Saturday, April 6, newly ordained priest Fr. Nersess Krajekian celebrated his first Badarak at St. Sahag Armenian Church in Minneapolis. Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan, who served as his sponsoring priest during the ordination, traveled to Minneapolis to be present for this special occasion and to offer his support and blessings.

Fr. Nersess was ordained on February 22 and spent his 40-day period of prayer and seclusion at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary. Prior to ordination, he completed his internship at St. Mary Armenian Church, where he gained valuable pastoral experience.

The faithful of St. Sahag warmly welcomed their new pastor with open hearts as he led them in prayer and worship for the first time. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Der Nersess on this important beginning and wish him a blessed and fruitful ministry in the Armenian Church.

DIOCESAN & OTHER NEWS

National Council of Churches Urges Preservation of Artsakh’s Heritage

The National Council of Churches (NCC) released a strong statement this week expressing solidarity with Armenia and Artsakh, condemning the destruction of Artsakh’s Armenian Christian heritage, and calling for the release of all captives held by Azerbaijan.

The Eastern Diocese’s Legate and Ecumenical Director, Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, called the statement “an extremely important expression of support by America’s foremost ecumenical organization, which builds on the NCC’s forceful statements on behalf of Armenia and Artsakh throughout these years.”

Under the title “Let Us Not Forget About Armenia,” the NCC statement reads: “There is widespread fear among Armenians worldwide that Armenia, and thereby the Christian presence in the region, will be overcome, and indeed wiped out entirely.” It cites the loss of Artsakh’s territories in the 2020 war, the “ethnic cleansing” of Artsakh’s Armenian population in 2023, and the ongoing Azeri “assault on the Christian heritage through the desecration and demolition of sacred sites in a long-standing campaign of cultural genocide.”

The ecumenical group names a number of Armenian churches and religious monuments in Artsakh that currently “face the gravest danger” of destruction—including the monasteries of Gandzasar, Amaras, and Dadivank—and calls on world authorities to ensure their protection and preservation. Additionally, the NCC calls for the release of the Armenian detainees and prisoners of war.

The NCC concludes: “We therefore solemnly appeal to religious and political leaders around the world to act now to preserve life and to safeguard the sacred churches of Artsakh as global treasures of the historic Christian heritage.”

Mid-Atlantic Clergy Gather for Final Retreat of Lent

Clergy of the Eastern Diocese gathered this week for the third of three Lenten Retreats, this time centered on the Diocese’s Mid-Atlantic region. Pastors from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington, North Carolina, as well as Florida and Massachusetts, met April 7-9 at the San Alfonso Retreat House in Long Branch, NJ.

Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan presided over the retreat, which was built around the theme of “The Spirituality of the Preacher.” A special guest of all three retreats this year was Archbishop Haigazoun Najarian, former Primate of Australia, who presented thought-provoking lectures on the priest as preacher, baptizer, pastor, and administrator, drawing on his long experience as a clergyman serving the Armenian Church in the homeland, Europe, Australia, and the Eastern Diocese of America.

The Diocese’s newest priest, Fr. Nerses Krajekian, having just completed his 40 days of seclusion following his ordination in February, traveled from Minnesota to join the retreat and was warmly welcomed by his brother pastors.

The 19 participating clergy spent an evening visiting St. Stepanos Church of Elberon, NJ, where pastor Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian welcomed the guests. There they prayed the Peace Hour, reflected on a meditation led by the Primate, and joined in a Lenten meal lovingly prepared by parish members.

During the service that evening, the Primate read official encyclicals of His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians, which bestowed the rank of Archpriest, or Avak Kahana, on Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, and honored Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan with the right to wear the floral cope (Dzaghgya Pilon).

Recalling the season’s three Lenten clergy retreats, Bishop Mesrop reflected warmly on “this time together filled with prayer, reflection, and meaningful conversation. We were especially blessed by the presence of Archbishop Haigazoun, whose wisdom enriched us all. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with my brother clergy in fellowship and shared spirituality.”

FAR NEWS

Training Armenia’s Next Generation of Innovators

Thanks to the Fund for Armenian Relief, 23-year-old Hovhannes Tosunyan (seen here) has been able to turn his childhood love for drawing into a thriving career in 3D modeling.

His journey began at FAR’s Gyumri Information Technologies Center (GITC), through a program supported by the Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America (AESA). Its aim is to help veterans of the 2020 Artsakh war build new careers in high-tech fields. With GITC’s help, Hovhannes developed his skills and, in March 2024, completed an advanced Blender course. Not long after, he secured a job as a machine-building parts modeler, setting him on the path to a promising future.

Since the program’s launch in 2021, some 500 veterans have gained valuable skills for future careers. Learn more about how FAR is helping to train and shape Armenia’s next generation of innovators, on FAR’s website.

Thanks to our Recycling Committee for their work in sorting and bringing home the recyclables every Sunday, especially during our recent Food Festival. What has been discouraging, though, is that people continue to throw half-full coffee cups and food into the container, which makes it very messy for us. Please put only the following in the container:

Empty plastic bottles

Empty aluminum cans

Empty glass bottles

Nothing else!!

No paper, no plastic silverware, no coffee cups, no paper plates, no food. We are trying to keep things simple.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Special Gift for St. Mary Gift Shop

St. Mary gift shop is offering limited numbers of imported bottles of medieval Armenian health elixirs formulated from ancient manuscripts deciphered at the Matendaran Museum of Ancient Armenian Manuscripts. These elixirs are made in Armenia by Armen Sahakyan, a pharmacologist and botanical scholar who has been working at the Matenadaran Museum for the last several decades. A trained medical doctor ordained a deacon in 1997, Sahakyan has dedicated his life to the maintenance of Armenia’s sacred botanical traditions.

The three different batches available at our gift shop (Royal Elixir, Arates Elixir and Arates Tonic) are made from a codified recipe of medieval Armenian medicine, using a special distillation process. They contain medicinal and aromatic plants, known for their healing properties. Through the distillation and aging process alcohol is created, so think of them as perhaps Armenia’s first (healthy) cognac!

The supplies are limited and each bottle is numbered, including the batch and year of production. All of the bottles were donated to St Mary Church, so 100% of the proceeds will go to the St Mary Endowment Fund, with a portion also going to support Armenian clergy serving in Artsakh.

BIBLE READING

29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. 30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the wayside, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. 31 And the multitude rebuked them because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. 32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? 33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

21 1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man says ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them, and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6 And the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them, 7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 10 And when he came into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. 12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of thieves. 14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased, 16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? 17 And he left them and went out of the city into Bethany, and he lodged there.

Matthew 20.29-21.17
