6 Reasons to Make Mindfulness Your New Year’s Resolution

We all do it. I thought I’d do it earlier this year. A friend of mine did it last week. Come January 1, as we say farewell to 2016 and get set to embark on a new year, most of us will be making a few promises to ourselves: thou shalt get more exercise, thou shalt eat healthier, thou shalt drink a little less wine, etc.

New Year’s resolutions aren’t like ordinary goals. They have a far more powerful effect on our psyche because the end of one year and the start of another symbolizes new beginnings, a new chapter, and another chance to achieve the things we’ve always dreamt of. (Or perhaps do away with a few unhelpful habits we’ve developed.)

So why should mindfulness be the first resolution on your list?

Norovirus: You Don't Want It

Norovirus, aka the "stomach bug," spreads fast—especially in shared spaces like residence halls, dining halls, and classrooms. Protect yourself:

  • Wash your hands 🧼 thoroughly with soap and water—hand sanitizer isn’t enough!
  • Don’t share food or drinks 🍕🥤
  • Clean surfaces 🧽 regularly, especially in common areas
  • If you’re sick, avoid spreading it to others by staying home 🛌 , disinfecting 🧽 bathroom surfaces immediately after use, and washing your hands 🧼 with soap and water,

Let’s keep campus germ-free! 💪

Starting the Spring Semester Strong

The start of a new year and semester is the perfect time to hit reset and focus on your health. Whether you’re setting New Year’s resolutions or just trying to stay on track, prioritizing wellness can help you stay energized, focused, and motivated all semester long. Here’s how to start strong:

1. Set Goals and Track Progress: Be specific about what you want to achieve—whether it’s working out three times a week or drinking more water. Break big goals into smaller steps, and celebrate your wins along the way.

2. Prioritize Sleep and Rest: Sleep fuels focus and keeps stress in check. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule and avoid all-nighters whenever possible—you’ll feel better and perform better.

3. Get Moving: Exercise isn’t just for fitness—it’s a stress-buster too. Hit the gym in Gosman, join an active club, or take a walk between classes to boost your mood and energy.

4. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated: Fuel your body with balanced meals and nutrient-rich snacks. Keep a water bottle handy to stay hydrated throughout the day.

5. Manage Stress Before It Manages You: Stay ahead of stress with meditation, journaling, or deep breathing. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the Brandeis Counseling Center (BCC) if you need extra support.

6. Stay Connected and Involved: College is more fun when you’re plugged in. Join clubs, volunteer with Waltham Group, or go to campus events to meet people and build a support system.

Final Thoughts: Starting the semester strong isn’t just about grades—it’s about taking care of yourself. Prioritize your wellness for a balanced, successful semester.
