Winter's a Wrap - Hello Spring & Summer!
Thank You to all Volunteers!
Our Club could not function without YOU! Whether it was helping out with the Jackrabbit program, at an event, in the lodge, waxing rental skis, leading a Chicks group, teaching lessons, coaching a program, or sitting on our Board - volunteers are the life blood of all things Wapiti Nordic! And these are just the Winter operations ... Summer volunteers rock too! April 24-30, 2022 is National Volunteer Week - so hold your head high and be proud of your contribution to our fantastic Grande Prairie nordic community!
Last call for tickets for LIVE shows in Grande Prairie!
We are less than two weeks out from this year's live event after having to go virtual in Jan 2021 due to the pandemic. Die hard fans hopefully have their tickets already. Never been before? Then you are in for a treat! This event is Wapiti Nordic's main annual fundraiser and helps subsidize a number of programs and Club activities. Please help spread the word and invite colleagues, friends and family! Attend one, two or all three nights as each show has a different film line up that was not available for rent: Friday, April 22nd, Saturday April 23rd and Sunday April 24th, 2022 at 7:00pm. Call the Grande Prairie Live Theatre box office at 780-538-1616 for tickets (sorry no online ticket sales). The shows will be held this year at the KMSC Law Performing Arts Theatre (John Paul II high school off 132 Ave) as the college (NWP) only had limited availability when we had to reschedule due to COVID-19 restrictions. This smaller venue will sell out for sure! Keep tabs on the BMFF Facebook page and our WNSC website for full details.
Spring General Meeting - Sat April 30th in person!
Club members are invited to come down to the Steve Cooper Lodge for 1:00pm on Saturday, April 30th to attend our on Spring General meeting. The meeting agenda can be previewed on our website. Advance nominations for the Board and procedural motions will be accepted via email until 12 noon Sat, April 23rd. We are also seeking a Secretary nomination - an important position to fill. See you there in person!
Message from Dallal - our Operations Coordinator
Dallal has a personal message of gratitude that she would like to share with all of our Winter 2021/2022 volunteers - read more here. And she is seeking volunteers available this Spring and Summer to help with a recreational running group or school group forest walks! What a great way to get outdoors and give back to your community!
Mountain Biking programs now open!
We have several mountain bike programs launched and ready to roll: Youth Mountain Biking - Recreational and Developmental; Youth Competitive with Pre-Season Training, and Ladies Gals'n'Gears. Don't delay - they will fill fast, especially as the weather improves! Full details and updates on our Mountain Biking web page!
Trail fun run events coming to Wapiti Nordic!
Wapiti Nordic is proud to be the host of two upcoming local community running events. The 5km 4th Annual Talk to Me Color Run in support of Mental Health on Sat, May 7th (which brought snow in May in 2019!!), and the Meet in the Middle 5km, 10km or 10 hour event on Sat, May 28th. Some other fun ways for you to enjoy our awesome trails!
Chicks on Sticks ... and Snowshoes!
The Chicks had a successful but different year. We were happy to see so many returning Chicks and to see new ladies embrace our love of cross country skiing. We had many great ski nights, but like everyone else this winter there were nights when we felt it was too icy to ski. We donned snowshoes or ice grippers and explored the snowshoe trails to the north and to the south! Some of our highlights included snow dancing in obscure swamps and watching the space station go overhead from a snowy off trail ridge! The Chicks program could not operate without our amazing volunteers. To offer groups of different abilities we are always relying on ladies to step up to lead or sweep groups. We are never disappointed. Thank you!!
School Ski Programs
If you expected a quiet ski during the week this winter, sometimes you may have been surprised! Students from the Grande Prairie Catholic Celtic Sports program and from Grande Prairie Public and Peace Wapiti were busy on the trails. Students from Grade 4 - 10 in the Grande Prairie Public Sports Academy spent several sessions with instructors learning how to ski. There were also several physical education classes and outdoor education classes from Peace Wapiti Academy learning how to ski. About 200 students were introduced to skiing through the school program operated by the club. The Celtics program provides instruction for additional students. Many thanks to the Club instructors and volunteers who helped facilitate these programs.
Race Team News
Well the race team has managed to keep busy and active all season! A huge thank you to the groomers for keeping us moving this long into the season! We’d like to thank the recreational skiers for your patience as the team raced by in various directions and speeds over the past months. With a special visit from our Provincial Sport Organization and multiple fun race events happening here at the ski club, it’s been a great season. If you have skiers aged 7-20+ that would like to get out on skis more than just once a week, please email Claire - for more information. Have a great summer!
