October 2022 Newsletter
October is here! Did you know October is the month when the leaves truly begin to change. A cool fact about October is that the traditional flower is the calendula, which symbolizes comfort, healing, protection, and grace. It is also the start of the air becoming crisp and cool. Make sure to start preparing for the fall festivities with friends and family, including pumpkin and apple picking. Enjoy October!

Positively Speaking: Patricia's Perspective

Career and Business Opportunities
for Older Adults

Business and career opportunities for older adults are discussed on my new Positive Aging podcast that launched on Rhode Island PBS on September 20. My guest on that podcast is Kerry Hannon, senior columnist for Yahoo Finance and author of In Control at 50+: How to Succeed in the New World of Work.

Hannon talks about the opportunities for older adults in the workplace as a consultant, entrepreneur, contract worker, or employee in addition to how remote work can expand our venues. You can tune in here

Here are my 5 takeaways for older adults to create more business opportunities:
Value your education, experience, and wisdom and gain more lifelong learning opportunities
We often take for granted what we as active agers bring to the table and sometimes hide them “under the table.” Access your skills and talents and talk about these strengths.

•Mind your greatest work-life assets– Your health and your time
We have less time chronologically as we get older but we often have greater choice about how we spend our time. Our health is our “bank account” and we need to safeguard it.

•Seek creative work platforms such as part-time, flex time, remote work, contract work, or being an entrepreneur
COVID has expanded venues for workers and older workers. Now there are choices for many. Remote work is no longer a novelty. It has often become the norm.

•Choose meaningful work to stay relevant.
We have so much wisdom from our life and work experiences. We know what works and what doesn’t and what has meaning for us. This is a great opportunity to reflect and do prayer to “know” what really speaks to us.

•Move past the myths:
Active agers are technologically averse and challenged. The reality is that 55+ are among the leading adopters and drivers of many tech devices and services. A myth discussed in Age of Majority founded by Jeff Weiss is:
Myth: Active Agers are no longer productive in the workplace. Reality: There is virtually no relationship between age and performance.
