This exclusive release showcases innovative hops that are new to the craft beer industry, making it a must-try for all of you beer enthusiasts. Manilita hops will have the spotlight shone on them with this beer, this vibrant hop variant from New Zealand offers a bold citrus and citrus zest flavor profile with more gentler notes of grapefruit, papaya and red berries.
As one of the few locations receiving this beer—and with a larger allocation than any other store—we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

EXPRESSION 34 - NEW PARK
Hazy IPA
Of course this is the beer of the week! Utilizing Manilita hops, a very new varietal in the craft beer world, this brew is also loaded with flaked wheat, oats and Pilsner malt. Light in pour with a fluffy mouthfeel, this beer is bursting with flavors of lush tropical fruits, coconut, papaya, grapefruit and a gentle dank finish!

WHERE DO WE FIND NEW HOPS?
Keeping with the theme of new and exciting hop varietals, lets get into how exactly we come to discover and enjoy them! This process may include a variety of things, let's break them down in detail!
It is very common for breeders to select a varietal with existing desirable characteristics in flavor and aroma to be the foundation for cross breeding. Cascade, Fuggle, Chinook and Citra hops are popular varieties for the base of cross-breeding hops as they all have a profile unique to them that is palette-able with a large variety of other flavors, making them some of the top contenders! Another crucial factor to consider when dabbling with breeding is the alpha acid levels, the chemicals found in the hop plant that are the source of the their bitterness. The longer boiling time, the more forward bitterness you will receive, making this a pivotal point of conversation when deciding not only what hops you wish to cross-breed, but which hops to utilize in your brew!
Cross-Pollination is another popular method used, where pollen from a male plant is transferred to the female flowers of another plant that will provide you with an offspring bursting with characteristic of both parents! Hops actually have both male and female parts, only the female portion produce those classic, cone shaped hops! While the male part of the plant is present for the pollination process, they are not essential for the female to produce healthy hop cones. Cross pollination is a delicate process as when male plants are present, depending on the stage of growth, they can attempt to pollinate the female plants which may lead to seeds in the cone, overall reducing the quality of the hops. In fact, in most commercial production, male plants are often removed from the field to ensure that does not become a risk.
Once these processes take place, we are looking at seedling evaluation to determine the quality and potential of the seeds once planted and grown. This is also when we look at these plants metaphorically under a microscope to deep dive into crucial factors such as disease resistance, potential of yield and what brewing characteristics they provide. Once they reach the desired quality, these seedlings are repetitively cloned to not only create a sufficient number of plants, but to ensure there is consistency from one plant to another.
Extensive testing is done once we reach this process to determine a variety of information, flavor profile, aroma, etc! Some would argue this is the most "fun" piece of this process, this is what makes the hop AND the beer what it is! Once these hops show promise and pass all necessary tests, they may be released into the brewing industry to be propagated, distributed and keep growing!
