GVCO Caring Hands News
In this issue: Charlestown Day, upcoming volunteering opportunities, Cradles to Crayons, Tent Sale, Home of the Sparrow, Good Neighbor Initiative, Project Update, GVCO programs and supporting GVCO
GVCO is very excited to have the incredible number of volunteers for our GVCO Caring Hands group this year. We have had a fantastic start this year with the two events held in September. For those students and families that participated in our month long donation drive, please see the very nice note from the SPCA's Sr Director of Development below:
Thank you, GVCO! Hailey came back raving about the event as well! I'm very happy to hear she provided your team and students with the best experience. Joan, it was so nice meeting you the other day as well. You all are wonderful and I can't thank you enough for all your efforts! If you ever want to collaborate again, I'm sure Hailey would be excited to do so.
Thank you again.
And what a turnout for Charlestown day!
We had 41 volunteers for Charlestown Day. While the day had a rough start, the event organizers could not have had a successful day without the help of our Caring Hands volunteers. The event coordinator and township leadership were thrilled with the level of help GVCO Caring Hands provided.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

What a great start to the year! We are hoping to provide a ton of community service during the remainder of the school year. See some of the up coming opportunities to GET INVOLVED.

Next up is our Caring Hands Tent Sale and our 3rd Annual Cradles 2 Crayons Donation Drive.
These two events will be happening simultaneously over the next several weekend.

Please sign up:

Our tent sale is an annual event to raise monies for the numerous causes that Caring Hands supports throughout the year. GVCO receives thousands of gifts from an online gift retailer each spring and we resell these items in the fall every year. This year's tent sale will occur over the next 3 Saturdays (10/23, 10/30 and 11/6) at the new GVCO Community Center complex on Bacton Hill Rd. We will be looking for numerous volunteers throughout...and stop by and check out the merchandise as it makes for great gifts for the holiday season.
Cradles 2 Crayons is a wonderful cause that we have been associated with for a number of years. We will be hosting Drop Off Days at the new GVCO Community Center complex on Bacton Hill Rd on the next 3 Satudays (10/23, 10/30 and 11/6). Once again, we will be looking for a group of volunteers to assist during the Cradles 2 Crayons Drop Off Days.
A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.

GVCO Project Update
GVCO Community Center

THE STONE BASE COURSE FOR THE DRIVEWAY & UPPER PARKING LOT HAS BEEN INSTALLED

For 3 straight days, Charlestown Paving worked to get the drive/upper parking lot installed. What seemed like 100 truckloads of material were delivered, leveled and than rolled. The picture above is taken from the back of the site from behind the practice field. The pad for the building is on the left. The driveway down to Bacton Hill Rd can be seen at the far end.

The season is upon us and our GVBL winter league Skills Assessment sessions have begun.

We ask that the registered participant attend at least one of these assessment session over the course of the next two weeks. We will use these evaluation as part of the process of assigning teams in order to create the greatest balance throughout each division.

ALL SKILLS ASSESSMENT SESSIONS WILL BE HELD AT THE UPPER AND LOWER GYMNASIUMS AT THE GENERAL WAYNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 20 Devon Rd., Malvern. Check in will take place through the bus entrance located off of Grubb Road in the rear of the building. We would like everyone to check in at the tables outside the entrace to the upper gym.

GVCO Cheer

This month kicked off the flag football games which means our little flag cheerleaders (K-1st grade) started cheering at games. It was great to get families out to the GVCO site. The cheerleaders ended the game by dancing to Build Me Up Buttercup, that has quickly become their favorite song to dance to!
The GV Cheerleaders supported breast cancer awareness this weekend at the football games by wearing pink and using our pink poms. The GVFL/ GV Cheer 50/50 proceeds went to the UniteForHer organization.

Philadelphia is the nation's poorest big city with nearly 300,000 children living in poverty across the region. Cradles to Crayons Philadelphia has a reach that goes well beyond the borders of the city itself.

Chester County, including the Malvern area, is included in the region in which Cradles to Crayons is having an impact. GVCO is once again partnering with Cradles to Crayons, hosting our 3rd Annual Donation Drive. Reaching out to our Great Valley community in an effort to help those right here in our area.

Part of Cradles to Crayons' mission: "Our whole focus is to make our collaborative process as easy and streamlined as possible. This helps us to empower the children we serve collaboratively — at home, at school, and at play — by providing the everyday essentials that match their individual needs." GVCO's reach here in the community, coupled with Cradles to Crayons' ability to reach those in need is the perfect partnership for our GVCO Caring Hands foundation.

Childhood poverty is a serious nationwide issue and the local area is not immune. Without adequate and appropriate clothing, children face unfair barriers and participate in life on an unequal playing field. Cradles to Crayons uses the term “Clothing Insecurity” as part of our efforts to formally recognize the issue, and increase awareness on this hidden basic need.

GVCO is proud to be partnering with such a worthy organization in helpng Cradles to Crayons reach its inspiring mission and goals.

GVCO Donor Spotlight
Tom Farrelly

Daughter:`Hey Dad", Me, "Greatest thing I'll ever be"

What GVCO provided for me and the girls CAN NOT be overstated. Picking them up after school, getting to practice/games, out to eat, hanging with other parents, etc. We got to interact/experience a bit of actual day/day life on life's terms.

Nothing takes the place of being there and for sure some things would have been different. So many experiences, "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want". I got to play Dad and coach...and the girls had a role model.

Know that GVCO has made a difference in the lives of my daughters and myself. That is very noble.

-Tom Farrelly, GVBL Ref & GV Dad whose daughters are GVSD graduates and GVBL participants.
