Building Confidence in Children and Youth with Special Needs

March 2025

Hello April,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of two of our dedicated volunteer pilots, Kevin Lacey and Dave Wheeler, who recently lost their battles with cancer. Both men had a deep passion for aviation and generously shared their love of flying with our incredible kids. Their dedication and kindness made a lasting impact, and they will be greatly missed. May they rest in peace.

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities while also advocating for inclusion and opportunities. At Challenge Air, we remain committed to empowering children and youth with special needs through the life-changing experience of flight, helping them see the world from a new perspective—one without limits.

Spring is always a busy time for Challenge Air, and we are thrilled to host four upcoming Fly Days: March 29 in Dallas, April 26 in Chattanooga, May 3 in Sonoma, and May 31 in Spokane. In addition to these Fly Days, please check below and visit one of our upcoming fundraising events in Santa Rosa, Denver, Dallas and Spokane.

These fly day events and fundraising events would not be possible without the generous support of our donors, the dedication of our volunteers, and the hard work of our staff. Bringing the gift of flight to these families requires both financial support and many helping hands, and we are grateful to everyone who makes it possible. I hope to see you at one of these events.

All the best,

April Culver

Remembering Dave Wheeler & Kevin Lacey:

Passionate Pilots and Dedicated

Advocates for Challenge Air

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of one of Challenge Air’s longtime volunteer pilots and Board of Trustee, Dave Wheeler, on March 14th after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Dave began flying our amazing co-pilots in 2011, bringing joy and inspiration to so many children with special needs. In 2018, he joined our Board of Trustees, where his passion and dedication helped shape our mission.

His kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to our cause will be deeply missed. No service has been scheduled at this time.

Fly high, Dave—your legacy soars on.

Challenge Air is deeply saddened by the passing of Kevin Lacey, a dedicated aviator and friend to our mission. Known for his passion for aviation and his generous spirit, Kevin touched the lives of many with his expertise and kindness.

During a North Texas Giving Day event in 2020, Kevin took the time to create a special video promoting Challenge Air's mission. His genuine enthusiasm and commitment to helping children with special needs experience the joy of flight was evident as he shared our story with potential donors and volunteers

His contributions to the flying community and his support for programs like Challenge Air will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Blue skies forever, Kevin. ✈💙

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!

Our board and staff came together for a fun and productive strategy session, mapping out exciting plans for the future of Challenge Air. With an engaging team-building pickleball activity, big ideas and great conversations filled the day as we work towards ensuring more kids with special needs get the chance to soar! ✈️💙

Thank you so much for supporting the Challenge Air mission.
