Garces Memorial 75th Anniversary

Ram for a Day

Registration Closes Monday, November 14th

Our annual Ram For a Day is next week on Wednesday, November 16th. We would love to have every 8th grader who is considering Garces for high school to attend and learn more about our beautiful little school on the hill. Ram For A Day is a hands-on opportunity for prospective 8th-grade families to engage in mini-lessons from some of our amazing teachers in various academic departments such as Science, FFA, Spanish, Project Lead The Way, Robotics, and Business. Future Rams really get a feel for what it means to be a part of the Garces family. The day will be filled with events and activities for prospective families to answer their most basic question: Is Garces the place for my student?

Parents are encouraged to attend the event with their student. We have an exciting and informational day planned for them as well. We have a campus tour led by current and alumni parents, who will be available to answer any questions you may have. There will also be interactive classroom visits and presentations from our administration team to cover topics on Academics, Spirituality, School Safety, Athletics, and Affordability. Students will be provided with an unbeatable experience with the ability to get a feel for campus during our campus-wide activities and mini-lessons with our amazing teachers. The day finishes with a rally and a performance from our competitive dance team.

We would love to have you and your student attend Ram For A Day on Wednesday, November 16th, from 8:30 am to 1 pm. You can register for Ram For A Day through Monday, November 14th on our website https://garces.org/ram-for-a-day/

Student News

Link Crew

Our Counselors, Mrs. Howlett and Dr. Pavletich, and the Garces Link Crew students met with freshmen students during their theology classes to discuss "Adapting to High School." To get to know the freshmen, the Link Crew students shared a little information about themselves and then conducted a fun icebreaker game. The freshmen students were paired up, and they had to build a paper airplane using only one hand each. Once the airplanes were built, they competed to see who could fly their paper airplane into a trash can first. The exercise was a hit, as there was lots of laughter which facilitated some great small-group discussions. Link Crew is an internationally recognized high school student leadership program that welcomes and mentors freshman students to help them feel more comfortable about the first year of their high school experience.

Meals with Love

Last Thursday the Meals with Love Club went shopping for groceries and prepared a delicious homemade dinner for families staying at the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House. We love seeing our Rams giving back to others. Thank you Génesis Vásquez, Brandon Tran. Yovanni Nyguyen, and Erin Castillo. You guys rock! And a shout out to club moderators Mrs. Andie Haines and Mr. Nathan Holmes who make it possible.

Hispanic & Latino Culture Club

This past Sunday, November 6th, the Hispanic & Latino Culture Club participated in this year’s Día de Los Muertos festival put on by the Kern Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The club put together an altar that included pictures of their loved ones who have passed away and some of their favorite foods, like sweet bread! Students had so much fun participating in this event and look forward to next year’s. The club wants to give a big thank you to H.A. Sala for his support and for sponsoring a spot for our club to build an altar, we are so thankful!

Veteran's Day Assembly

We celebrated our country's veterans on Thursday at an all-school assembly. Our guest speaker was veteran Fr. Santiago Iriarte of St. Anne's parish in Ridgecrest. Fr. Santiago joined the army at 30 as a chaplain assistant. He served in Bosnia and Kuwait. Fr. Santiago shared with the students that when his unit came under attack, God answered his prayers and he believes that through the power of praying the rosary, Mary shielded his unit because no one in his unit was hit by gunfire. He told the students never to give up hope because God has a plan for each of us. God kept Fr. Santiago alive for a purpose. He encouraged them to use their faith for good, to help each other, and to know that God loves them. After the talk, there was a flag folding ceremony, and then students wrote a letter of thanks and support which will be sent directly to active, reserve, and veteran military. Along with our students, we had some special veterans in attendance. It was a special morning of honoring and remembering those who served and sacrificed for our freedoms.

Dual Enrollment Update

Garces Memorial High School in partnership with Bakersfield College offers 11 dual enrollment courses in a variety of disciplines. Dual enrollment courses allow students to earn college credit while they are still in high school. This is not only a great way to receive rigorous, college-aligned curriculum, but it also allows students the ability to begin accruing college credits. The counselors will provide detailed information to parents and students on dual enrollment course options during the class registration process in early spring.

Sports Update

Provided by Trevor Horn, Sports Information Director

Garces Memorial is winding down the Fall sports season with three teams still in action, and we have our first Winter sport regular season contest coming Monday at home with girls basketball hosting North High. It’s an exciting time.

Cross Country

The Rams wrapped up the league championships on Thursday at RiverWalk Park. Sophomore Sofia Moody led the way with a 26th place finish.

Football

The season concluded for the Rams last Friday in a heart-breaking 21-20 loss for Garces against Clovis in the opening round of the Central Section Division I playoffs. The Rams finished tied for second in league while playing the toughest schedule in the Central Section.

Girls Tennis

As seen above, the Rams won the section D-I title on Wednesday with a dominating 6-0 victory over Clovis North in the finals. The Rams went undefeated against section opponents this season after capturing a second consecutive D-I title, the first time that feat has happened in school history. The Rams will play in the CIF Southern California Regional Championship next Friday and Saturday at The Claremont Club in SoCal.

Kelsey Abraham, the top seed in singles, Taylor Crider, seeded 10th and the No.1 doubles duo of Jocie Sala and Kylee Limpias will compete this weekend in the Central Section Individual Championships. Abraham finished second last year while Sala and Limpias are seeking a third consecutive doubles section title.

Water Polo

Garces Memorial is proud to say we are the only school hosting boys and girls section championships this weekend.

The boys are seeded 3rd in D-II and will host No. 4 Clovis West today at 5 p.m. in the finals. The Rams went on the road Wednesday night at beat No. 2 Kingsburg 7-5 in the semifinals to advance.

The girls are the top seed in D-II and will host No. 2 Morro Bay at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in the finals. The girls are riding a nine-game win streak and have outscored opponents 61-20 in the first three rounds. A win in the finals will advance the Rams to the CIF NorCal playoffs that will begin Tuesday.
