Interior Design student makes her mark
For WKU Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising major Anya Shah, the Hilltopper Spirit means one word, “community.” The 31-year-old, non-traditional student from St. Louis, has made her mark on campus by serving as president of the WKU International Interior Design Association (IIDA), where she has found a community.

While IIDA has been on WKU’s campus for over 25 years, Shah, along with the help of other WKU IIDA members, brought the group to “Campus Center” status with IIDA. According to the association, IIDA Campus Centers are an invaluable part of the design community that offers students, educators, and design professionals an opportunity to work together on different projects and initiatives. IIDA also believes that "this exchange of ideas and creative development between young and emerging designers as well as established industry leaders is essential to driving innovation and shaping the future of interior design." Establishing Campus Center status has given WKU IIDA members the opportunity to receive scholarships and participate in award-winning competitions.
Forensics Team senior wins Holle Award
WKU Forensics Team senior Kelly Lingen, a Creative Writing major from Minneapolis, Minnesota, won the Holle Award for Excellence in Forensic Competition and a $10,000 prize in the Crimson Classic, a virtual competition hosted by the University of Alabama. Named after Everett Holle, a graduate of the University of Alabama and a 40-year veteran of the television industry, the Holle Award is given to the student who earns the most points across five different events in each of the three genres of competitive public speaking: interpretation of literature, public address, and limited preparation. Award honorarium supports 2 WKU funds
Ally Financial and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) named Amber L. Martin the second-ever recipient of the Ally Sees Her Award in recognition of her dedication to giving back to her community and her leadership in promoting the next generation of minority dealers. As part of the recognition, Martin could designate where the $10,000 honorarium was directed, and WKU was one of two organizations she selected. The portion allocated to WKU was used to support two funds that were created through the philanthropic efforts of her parents, Gail B. Martin and the late Cornelius A. Martin. The first fund is the Martin Minority Teacher Scholarship, which was named for her family and was established to recruit minority students who are interested in studying education. The second fund is the Gail Martin Lecture and Faculty Development Series, which was named for her mother and was established to support faculty development and bring guest speakers to campus.
