Pride,

Happy Sunday!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and that you're fully relaxed, reenergized, and well rested for the upcoming week.

I've spent some time over the past week thinking about this question: What's the Goal for Our Children?

It's great that football is back in season and we love seeing our team take the ball across the goal line for a touchdown (or in volleyball, hitting the ball inbounds on the other team's court, or for swimming and cross country, it's about being faster than your last time).   In every sport, there is a clear goal in mind. As teachers and parents, what is our end goal as we teach our children?

I believe one of the primary targets is helping our children become independent. We want them to need us less and become confident in themselves.  How do we help support them in this process?

  1. Encourage them to take appropriate risks. What are they ready to do next? Do they need a little extra encouragement? Do they really need our help with that? Do we allow them to try it themselves? Are our expectations high enough for them? Do we allow them to make their own decisions about the small things today so they can make good decisions about bigger things tomorrow? These are great questions to ask to help them move towards independence.
  2. Help them know that failure and mistakes are expected. Few of us get things right the first time. True growth is about learning from what didn't work as much as what did work. Our children need to see how close they came even when they did not hit the mark. Doing their best is the target on the wall.
  3. Ask more questions rather than always giving the answers. "What do you think you should do?" "Does that make sense to you?" "Did you talk to the teacher or coach or person in charge?" "Why do you think that happened?" "If the same thing happens again, what could you do differently?" "What do you think you would do if that happened to you?" Obviously, the questions get more complex as our children get older. We want them to develop mental models for solving their own problems as they mature. This helps them know what to do when we are not always nearby.
  4. Help them understand and accept the reality of consequences. If we make good choices, there are good results. If we don't, there are consequences, and some consequences are painful.  As adults, we don't want our children to experience pain, but pain can be a meaningful teacher. For most situations, it is better for our children to learn from short term repercussions today as opposed to life altering effects later. There is a law of natural consequences that has to be obeyed. We want our children to understand that law when they are younger, not older.

Our goal as teachers and parents really is to help our little ones grow into independent big ones.

Pride, thank you for giving us the opportunity to work with your student and helping them increase their independence.

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings,

This week I was able to start my lessons on self-control. This is a topic that everyone, from Kindergarten to adult can struggle with. With the younger students, we read Clark the Shark and talked about a time and place for everything. In regards to the classroom, recess, lunch and home, we talked about when we can run, when do we need to walk, when do we need to raise our hands, not talk, eat or sleep. We marked this on a worksheet. Ask your student if they have seen me and if they have, ask them what Clark the Shark says we need to do in school. For the older groups, 3rd and 4th, we are reading My Mouth is a Volcano and doing an activity. The activity is self control strategies. For the oldest groups, 5th and 6th, we are watching a video about self-control, doing an activity and learning some coping skills.

Tomorrow I get to start my Girls on the Run group. I am so excited to challenge myself with this new activity and to get to know the girls on the team better. We have eleven girls signed up so there are four more girls that could join us. If you are interested in your girl participating on the team (grades 3, 4, 5 or 6), please register them at GOTR-Tricounty.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.

Hugs,

Mrs. Carr

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello Pride!!

We have had a great week!! Parents, if you have not already completed the Parent 101 survey, please do so. Parent 101 is designed to be an additional opportunity to build home-school connections by having members of the community speak about issues impacting our students. This week students have been able to send "shout outs" for their teachers, here are a few that have come in so far: "Coach Dawson has helped me change my attitude" and "Ms. Kunde is the best 6th grade math teacher ever-she makes it fun to learn". If you have a shout out for a teacher or staff member please use this link https://tinyurl.com/fr88z6xj.

Each team is providing a weekly email with a schedule of tests and other important information, if you are not getting theses emails, please reach out to your students' teachers. These are helpful in knowing what tests and other major assignments are occurring as well as assisting you in knowing what students should have completed. Please help your student by checking Power School and helping them to stay on top of assignments, the first nine weeks ends on October 11.

We have been focusing on Perseverance this week, please have conversations with your students about having a growth mindset and working towards goals. One of the quotes we have referenced was from Winston Churchill " Success is not final, Failure is not fatal, It is the courage to continue that counts". Thank you for all your support and as always, please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.

Warmly,

Christy Dempsey

Happy Sunday Friends!

I hope everyone has had a great weekend and are looking forward to a new week. I am excited to see everyone dazzled up for spirit week this week. I am also looking forward to seeing how our athletes do during their games and meets. Our coaches and athletes have been spending much time practicing and preparing for their games and whatever the outcome, we are proud!

Things to know:

-9th graders, please make sure that you are attending class. When one begins taking high school credit courses, there are attendance requirements for passing the course. Therefore, students must not acquire more than 5 unexcused absences. In the case that a student receives more than this, they will have to attend attendance recovery outside of school to make up the time.

-8th graders, the deadline has passed for signing up, and paying for the PSAT. Please stay tuned for further updates regarding the test on October 12th.

-7th, 8th, and 9th graders, if you missed picture day this past Friday, please mark your calendars for Friday, October 21st for makeup picture day.

Quote of the week:

"Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it."

Winter sports are right around the corner. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Ball at rball@riverwalkacademy.com or 803-981-7061.

Currently Riverwalk Academy offers boys basketball in the winter. Because we do not offer girls basketball at this time, our female athletes are able to tryout for the school in which they are zoned for. However, I do want to see what the interest level is among our female athletes to start a girls basketball program.
