July 31, 2023 - Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Dear Friend,
Happy Feast Day! Today, the entire Ignatian family around the world celebrates the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola. If you are reading this, then you too are part of this family.
I am proud to lead a team that continues the work of Ignatius. We are passionate about inviting others to experience the graces of Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises. To them and the multiple Jesuits we work with, God bless you.
Thanks to the Exercises, we have discovered that a deep and intimate relationship with Jesus is crucial to live out our faith in today’s world. We are nurtured by the experience of being invited to be received under his standard, through the intercession of his mother (Sp.Ex 147).
That’s why I am inviting you to experience the same. We have compiled a useful list of places offering the Exercises, in its different forms, online or in person. Our friends, colleagues, and partners in ministry do an amazing job making the Exercises available.
Enjoy the graces that today offers. It is our day.

Lastly, the staff of OIS has recently said goodbye to our colleague, Kevin O’Brien. I wish to formally thank Kevin for his many contributions to the ministry of the Exercises. We are grateful for his many years of service to OIS. We wish him the best for him and his family.

A History of Slavery, Abolitionism, and the Catholic Church
In this thought-provoking work, Rev. Christopher J. Kellerman, SJ, provides a rigorously researched, era-by-era history of the Catholic Church's teachings and actions related to slavery.
By telling stories of enslaved Catholics and Catholic slaveholders, analyzing arguments of theologians who either defended or condemned slaveholding, and examining documents of popes and councils, Kellerman's book reveals disturbing answers to contemporary questions about the Church's role in the history of slavery and especially in the Atlantic slave trade.
Fr. Kellerman now serves as the Secretary of Justice and Ecology of the Jesuit Conference (USA and Canada). Click here to listen to his interview on the Gloria Purvis Podcast, and click here for a video interview from the publisher.
