Here at Welcome House Raleigh we are caught up in Advent! The themes of the season are evident all year long. . . but ESPECIALLY at this time of unprecedented need, we understand and see how God is shaping our gift of hospitality into hope, peace, love and joy. Check out our virtual Advent Wreath below for a few highlights and prayer requests. Thank you for joining us in this adventure of welcome!

As Kabul descended into chaos and we began to understand the scope of work that stretched before us, there were so many unanswered questions. One of the biggest was “Where are hundreds of people who may or may not speak English going to find jobs?” . . .

Hope

On December 25, 1979, Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan. Most of the people of Afghanistan have never lived in a land of peace. They have endured near constant war and bloodshed for decades. . .

Peace

One of the great delights of this season is watching faith communities come together to meet the needs of their neighbors. . .

Love

N. was one of our first guests following the initial Covid-19 travel restrictions. She is a Kurdish refugee who came to Raleigh alone. . .

Joy

This year we will read the story of Christmas again, but perhaps we will see more than just the sweetness of a baby born in a manger. This year the verses of holy scripture will remind us that Jesus was born in an occupied land, that his parents fled from their country to Egypt without documentation, that wealthy men were led to him and brought gifts - sharing from their abundance. We will see faces and situations in those ancient words that resonate more clearly and vividly because we have taken the risk to welcome the stranger.

The Word became flesh and blood,

    and moved into the neighborhood.

We saw the glory with our own eyes,

    the one-of-a-kind glory,

    like Father, like Son,

Generous inside and out,

    true from start to finish.

(John 1:14 The Message)

Truly God is with Us! Blessing be upon you as you make room in your hearts for the Christ Child in this season of light.
