Affording Rent

March 11, 2025

Enjoy this week's "Investor Insights," a weekly newsletter that highlights the financial news you need and provides tips and tricks for making better investment decisions.

  • To afford the median-priced rental apartment ($1,599) while spending no more than 30% of earnings on housing, a minimum wage worker would need to work 106 hours per week. This is more than triple the national average workweek of 34.1 hours. 1

  • Many Americans plan to extend full-time work, work in retirement, or never retire. About 36% of non-self-employed workers plan to retire at 70 or older, and 53% plan to work in retirement. Nearly 40% of surveyed workers fear outliving their savings. 2

  • The Nasdaq has now fallen a similar amount in the last 13 trading days (-12.4%) that it fell in the first 13 trading days of the COVID Crash back in 2020. *3

  • In 2024, the top three U.S. importers were Mexico ($506 billion), China ($439 billion), and Canada ($413 billion), making up 42% of total imports. These three countries accounted for $1,357 billion of total U.S. imports. 4
