AUGUST 2021
In August 1762 the sandwich, as we know it, was created when the Earl of Sandwich requested meat between two pieces of bread.
August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on August 28, 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.
There are some pretty fascinating holidays in August which are celebrated in different parts of the world. On August 1st, we have World Scout Scarf Day, as well as the Official Birthday and Coronation of the King of Tonga. August 5th is National Underwear Day (US), August 11th is Mountain Day (Japan), August 16th is National Rum Day (US) and August 20th is World Mosquito Day. What a month!
Unlike most other months, August has just one birthstone – peridot. One of the lesser-known gems, peridots come in shades from grass-green to a more earthy olive hue. They’re quite a unique gem, really, and quite rare as they can only be found from two very different sources – they can be formed deep in the earth and expelled to the surface along with lava, and they can be found in meteorites! It is claimed that peridots have healing powers and can protect the bearer from evil.

Aug. 13, 2021, face coverings or masks are required in all indoor spaces throughout Oregon.
The announcement comes in response to surging COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations throughout Oregon.Chair Deborah Kafoury issued an executive rule on Aug. 9 that legally required individuals and businesses to comply with a county-wide rule. The rule was to remain operative unless a comparable rule was adopted by the state.
A day later, Governor Kate Brown and the Oregon Health Authority announced that indoor mask use will be mandatory statewide beginning Aug. 13, as well. The state rule applies to adults and children 5 and older and is comparable with Multnomah County mask requirements.
To assure statewide consistency, and to avoid confusion, the County will follow the statewide mandate, which is in effect from Aug. 13 until Feb. 8, 2022, and the comparable County mask requirements are rescinded. That will ensure a uniform statewide approach.

Passport to the City of Gardens
As we wind down Portland’s first City of Gardens Month, what better time to enjoy a moment in one of our most storied—but to many Portlanders today, least known—public gardens: Elk Rock, or as it is sometimes called, “Bishop’s Close.”
Shaped between early 1890s and the mid-1950s, the garden wears the fingerprints of legendary park designer John C. Olmsted, Portland’s first parks superintendent Emmanuel Mische, and one of Portland’s greatest garden designers Wallace K. Huntington. But the guiding hand for its decades-long development was its owner, Peter Kerr, a Scotsman who learned the craft of gardening from books, friends, and the great designers he hired (whose recommendations he often ignored). Now owned by the Oregon Episcopal Diocese but still open, quietly, to the public, it's a sublime experience, particularly in the early morning light.

Oregon Emergency Rental Assistance Program
The Oregon Emergency Rental Assistance Program helps eligible low-income households with their past due rent and utilities. This program uses funds from the federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which allocated a collective total of $280 million to Oregon, the City of Portland, and multiple counties in the state. In most cases, approved applications will result in payments made directly to landlords and utility providers.
Qualified renters who have experienced financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic, and are at risk of homelessness or housing instability, may apply for the Oregon Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
