Carol Bloemen's ComebackJoanna Biafore's Recess

Carol is excited to ramp up her time on campus in a role that she has held since 2012! She will be adding to her time working as a Program Advisor, Guidance Counsellor and Interim Campus Administrator at the Toronto campus. We had welcomed Joanna, an IHN 2016 graduate, into this role September 2020 when her two boys went back to school. But when classrooms closed in Ontario, again, Joanna had to step down this week, and like many moms out there, focus on her children's education with at-home learning. With stay-at-home orders being taken too far in the household, on her last day Joanna quipped, "The first order of business is—boys are outside in fresh air and nature for recess!"

Carol graduated from IHN in 2003 and has remained connected with the school ever since. She had been on hiatus in large part due to the challenges that our current landscape with Covid presented but she's happy to be back and is exceedingly well versed in all things IHN. With a seamless and measured approach she helps new and potential students navigate their Diploma program with joy and ease.

Robert Tomilson Shares Material From The Con Ed Course

Robert Tomilson takes us on a journey through a fascinating exploration of the Iris and Sclera of the eyes. Observe how to detect weakness in the body long before it manifests as disease. Iridology is a quick, accurate, non-invasive, and painless method of health analysis through the examination of the iris and a perfect “marriage” with any nutritional practice. The iris consists of tiny nerve fibers known as trabecula that reveal the body’s constitution, inherent weakness, level of health, and the transitions that take place in a person’s body according to the way they live. Discover how a simple step-by-step process can not only give you deep insights into various health issues but also maximize your marketability and thoroughly impress your clients.

IHN encourages any of our email list subscribers, who are interested in IHN's Diploma program, to join one of our educational standards bodies in their outreach. The event was created to help our alumni and students understand what the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (CANNP) does as an organization to serve our profession nationwide.

CANNP writes, "We are excited to open our doors and welcome you! CANNP has been around for over 10 years and is recognized as a successful and reputable professional association for nutritionists across Canada and beyond. Our focus is on making your health business thrive! We offer a long list of member benefits and support tools and the Open House is a great way to become familiar with what we have that can be of benefit to you. Attendees will get a deep peek into who we are and what we offer. And for those that attend, there will be some fabulous giveaways!

If you want unparalleled business support, to be kept up-to-date on industry happenings that affect you, and to be part of an organization that works for industry recognition, then you should join us to learn more. We will share everything from how and why CANNP got started, to an overview of the many benefits, to a look at what is happening behind the scenes.

Thinking about joining an association that sets you apart? One that gives you great value for your dollar? That works for you on the most important issues?

Put it in your calendar for Monday, January 25! We look forward to showing you all that a CANNP membership offers to help you and your health business thrive. Registration is required. Additional instructions and reminders will be sent to you as the event approaches."

We would also like to invite our email list subscribers, considering IHN's Diploma program, to explore the website and/or contact the team at, another long-time educational standards body partner—The International Organization of Nutritional Practitioners (IONC). Discover how their organization is in service to professionals in our field.

From IONC's website, "IONC seeks to create a unique form of Regulatory status for Nutritionists. We continue discussions and have meetings planned with government delegates concerning regulation and recognition of Orthomolecular and Holistic Nutritionists . It is IONC’s position that our members and the public interest would be better served if the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC) were to grant self-governing status to qualified ROHP/RNCP practitioners. A proto-submission outlining a new improved Drugless Practitioners Act or Natural Medicine Practitioners Act is currently under development that could see the integration of our practitioners into a multi-disciplinary approach to health care in the future. This goal may be lofty but it is the direction our organization believes to be imperative for creating legitimacy and stable practices for practitioners in a constantly changing legislative landscape.

Alternatives To Single-Use Plastics

What do you get when you tightly weave fibres of bamboo and sugarcane pulp? An eco-friendly, biodegradable alternative to disposable take-out containers and cutlery. Unlike traditional plastics that take 450 years to decompose, this new green tableware takes only 60 days. Julie Zhu, a scientist on the project, explained in a November 18, 2020, Good News Network article (3 minute read), “Researchers Make Biodegradable Tableware From Sugar And Bamboo”, that, “It is difficult to forbid people to use one-time-use containers because it’s cheap and convenient”. The team is determined to produce disposable containers, but with more sustainable materials than we have seen.

Also referred to as garbanzo beans, they are a versatile, nutritious legume that is a staple in many diets. Chickpeas are an excellent source of molybdenum – an essential mineral that activates enzymes that help break down harmful sulfites and prevent toxins from building up in the body. They are a very good source of fibre, encouraging satiety by delaying digestion. This supports weight management that can have positive effects on blood sugar, hormone regulation, and heart disease.
