Still Listening:
Parish Conversations about the Potential Capital Campaign Survey Results

Last Sunday! - July 31
In Church After Each Service

This Sunday, July 31, is the last of our Sunday "We'll Still Listening" post service conversations. You'll have an opportunity to ask questions about our Potential Capital Campaign and what all the surveys mean and don't mean. These conversations will hopefully provide clarity about the topic of a Potential Capital Campaign.

The wardens will be there, along with our clergy and others on the committee exploring the topic. We hope the 10 or so minutes we plan for these conversations each Sunday will bring clarity and help direct our vision for Good Sam.

NEW
Service Schedule

Beginning
Sunday, August 7

Beginning Sunday, August 7, the Early Service will begin at 8:15 AM and the Late Service will begin at 10:30 AM. Beginning September 11, Formation will begin at 9:30 AM. This really feels like it will be the best fit given the data you shared. In some ways it might feel like a compromise but given that we Anglicans are people of the Middle Way, it really does feel like the best way forward.

PLEASE NOTE: The LECTIONARY CLASS returns beginning August 7 at 9:30 AM in the Church Library. (See the article below.)

The Lectionary Class
Resumes!

Beginning
Sunday, August 7

We are very happy to announce that for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, Good Sam is resuming THE ADULT LECTIONARY CLASS on Sunday, August 7 at 9:30 AM in the church library.

This class discusses the Lectionary reading for the day. It's a great class and has had a faithful following.

PLEASE NOTE: All other adult, children, and youth formation begins on September 11. Only the Lectionary Class is beginning on August 7, which is also the Sunday we begin our NEW Service Schedule time of 8:15 AM for the early service and 10:30 AM for the late service.

Blessing of the Backpacks & Parish Lunch

Sunday, August 7

It's almost back to school time! On Sunday, August 7, we invite all children, youth & teachers to bring their backpacks and bookbags to church for a blessing. You'll get an awesome tag to hang on your backpack/bookbag to remind you that God's love and God's presence is always with you.

AND....to round out the day, we'll have a Parish Bagged Lunch and fellowship time after the late service! Karen Sproles is preparing our lunch, so we are guaranteed something YUMMY! Thank you Karen!!

REMINDER: Our NEW service schedule time will also begin on August 7. 8:15 AM for Early Church and 10:30 AM for Late Church.

August is Ministry Month

Sundays
August 14, 21 & 28

Where are you being called to serve?

Join us in August for Ministry Month.

On these three Sundays, we'll have the opportunity to learn more about the many ministries and programs we offer at Good Sam - and to sign up to serve and support those ministries: from the ministries that make our Sunday morning worship possible to the ways that we pray, give, and serve one another and the wider community.

Many of our ministries need new and revitalized support. From Sunday to Sunday, you may have noticed the same small rotation of people greeting, acolyting, reading the lessons, and running the A-V equipment.

Ministry Month will allow us to highlight the joy and gift of our various ministries - and to invite you to prayerfully consider participating in that joy and finding the gifts that await you as you serve.

Stay tuned for more details - Ministry Month is on the way.

Grace Point Day

Saturday
August 13

Where are you being called to serve?

The Diocese of East Tennessee welcomes the return of the annual Grace Point Day, an East Tennessee tradition featuring fun activities for adults, youth, and kids alike. Who wouldn’t want to experience just one more day of that summer camp experience, to see the progress made at Grace Point, and to celebrate the continued ministry of Grace Point to the Episcopal community in East Tennessee?

Activities will range from splashing in the pool, hiking on Grace Point’s 280 acres, kayaking to the eagle’s nest, arts and crafts in the art barn, and more. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

Party on the Pavement

Sunday, August 28
After the late service

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, August 28 after the late service - we're planning a Party on the Pavement!!

All children, youth, and their families are invited for an informal gathering, right after church. We encourage you to pack a picnic lunch, bring your bikes, scooters, or skates and we'll have some fun. More details will follow soon. Oh, and Popsicles will be served!

Tyson House
Work Day

August 6 - 9 AM

You are invited to Tyson House's Annual work day on August 6 starting at 9 AM!
We need your help to prepare for students to return to campus in the Fall. We will be providing lunch for all volunteers and tasks for the day include gardening, litter pick-up, and cleaning inside and outside of the building! Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and gardening tools. If you have questions, reach out to Caitlynne at tysonhouseadm@gmail.com or call us at 865-637-2031.

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate For July 31 goes to Rise Against Hunger.

As we at Good Sam know from our outrageously fun meal packing events, Rise Against Hunger fights food insecurity around the world by providing nutritious, life-sustaining meals so that children can succeed in school because they’ve had a good meal and that families can have active, healthy lives. Rise Against Hunger also works with farmers on improving crop production using quality seeds and fertilizer which in turn increases the families’ earning potential. As a result of the war in Ukraine, global food insecurity is in a truly dangerous state.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. (Please designate that it is for "Rise/Hunger" in the memo line).
