Chair's Message

I am excited to be bringing you some updates on the work our department members have been doing related to the Outcomes of Training Project (OTP) and 3-year Residency Program in Family Medicine. The team, led by Dr. Madeleine Montpetit, Complex System Navigator, which includes Dr. Douglas Archibald, Developmental Evaluator, Marisa Duval, Senior Project Manager, and Ashley Mautbur, Specialist, Project Management, has completed 9 roadshows, which took place from March through to May 2023. Conversations with our community stakeholders have helped us to evaluate the needs of our learners, faculty and partners in Health Care Delivery in Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley.

I encourage you to become involved, by joining the Thursday, September 7th curriculum framework discussion. Unit Program Directors, Coordinators as well as interested faculty members, will come together to design an initial curriculum framework for the 3-year Residency Program. This will incorporate our present curriculum integrated with new opportunities and CFPC Priorities, along with your suggestions from our roadshows. This model will be presented for wider input at our Departmental Assembly, at the Annual Faculty Retreat (Montebello) on Saturday, October 28th. Link to register.

I also invite you to attend a webinar that I will be hosting on Friday, September 22nd, at 8:00 a.m., which will provide an update on the work that has been done so far, and a Q&A for faculty. Register here!

I would like to thank our preceptors for taking the time to participate in the Resident Training Profile (RTP) survey, and I encourage others who have not yet done so, to complete the survey.

For questions pertaining to the Outcomes of Training Project and 3-year residency program and planning, or how to become involved, please contact Ashley Mautbur, pmodfm@uottawa.ca.

Faculty in the News

Dr. Ed Seale, Postgraduate Program Director and Assistant Professor, was among the team of authors who were recognized during an oral presentation at the Cumming School of Medicine Office of Health & Medical Education Scholarship (OHMES) Symposium in May 2023 on the 2022 project development and operationalization of a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) for Family Medicine Residency Selection in Canada. Follow this link to view the OHMES Abstract Submission. Note the submission was limited to 4 authors, but all co-investigators were acknowledged in the presentation.

Dr. Jonathan Fitzsimon, Assistant Professor and Medical Lead of the Renfrew County Virtual Triage and Assessment Centre, had his research paper, "Investigating Patient Experience, Satisfaction, and Trust in an Integrated Virtual Care (IVC) Model: A Cross-Sectional Survey," published in the July/August issue of Annals of Family Medicine.

Dr. Oussama Outbih, Assistant Professor and Unit Medical Director of the Riverside Family Health Team, was selected as a member of the Canadian team for the World Medical Football Championship at the 27th International Symposium of Medicine in Health and Sport in Vienna, Austria, which took place in July 2023. His team had a record of 2 wins 4 losses (they experienced a series of unfortunate injuries), but Dr. Outbih scored in each of their wins (Mexico, Puerto Rico). Dr. Outbih is shown in the team photo, below, (back row,12th from the left) when their Canadian team played Puerto Rico.

CanTreatCOVID Study

Dr. Simone Dahrouge, Associate Professor and Scientist for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and her team, have been engaged in a research study. The Ottawa Practice Enhancement Network (OPEN) is happy to announce it is participating in a national program for drug interventions for COVID-19. The Canadian Adaptive Platform Trial of Treatments for COVID in Community Settings (CanTreat COVID) is a $10 million-dollar Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded adaptive platform trial that seeks to identify effective, evidence-based medication in the treatment of COVID-19, reduce COVID-related symptoms and prevent Long-COVID. This program is a great opportunity to build national capacity in clinical research in primary care. Access this link for CanTreatCOVID research study information, or call: 1-888-888-3308.

Recruiting Primary Care Clinics

In support of some of the research activities within our department, we are looking for interested primary clinics to participate in two studies described below.

Implementing and Evaluating the Power over Pain Portal: Integrating an accessible, biopsychosocial approach to chronic pain in primary care settings.

This study is part of a CIHR grant application (deadline Sept 14, 2023). This study is using Implementation Science to develop optimal strategies to implement the Power over Pain portal into primary care clinics to support the care of people living with pain.

We are looking for clinics to identify a clinic champion and site team to work with us over a 3-year period to co-create, implement, and evaluate a localized strategy to guide implementation of the portal into the clinical workflows to support clinician and patient uptake. We expect that this study will be of benefit to your patients and clinicians by providing access to evidence based biopsychosocial tools that are typically difficult to access. To support participation, we will provide centralized research support as well as some financial compensation. We welcome clinical champions to join us as co-investigators or collaborators on this application.

Canadian Best Practices for the Development of Effective Clinical Decision Support Systems for the Management of Chronic Pain

This project is a Health Canada funded national endeavour led by the Centre for Effective Practice (CEP). The project has developed a primary care focused EMR based point of care clinical decision support system to help clinicians in managing chronic pain. The next step involves pilot testing the tool and we are seeking out primary care clinics to participate in this process, starting in September 2023 until January 2024.

This study will provide in-person technical support to integrate the tool into your EMR system and training on how to use the tool. Once there has been an opportunity to use the tool with patients, the study will involve surveys and interviews to assess the impact of the tool in supporting the management of chronic pain. We anticipate working with 1-3 clinicians in each clinic for the pilot testing. We expect this study to benefit your clinicians and patients by providing access to a tool to better support patient care. To support the participation of clinics in this study all research and technical support will be managed by the CEP. Additionally, there will be some financial compensation available.

If you are interested in participating in these studies, please email Dr. Arun Radhakrishnan, Assistant Professor: aradhakrishnan@toh.ca
