“Our Deepest Fear” By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us…
As physicians and health care professionals we have endured a significant load of stress through our careers and especially over the last 2 years of the pandemic. It has not been easy on some days to get out of bed, get dressed, make some food and get out the door. Not forgetting our PPE in hand. Even on the weekends, I’m sure you’ve had some change in your ability to do many activities and adventures you’d otherwise not hesitate at trying. The COVID pandemic has revealed a long list of mental and physical stressors that has pushed us to the brink of exhaustion. When you can’t do all the normal stress relieving travel, spa trips, fitness classes, brunch with your besties, how do you manage your stress levels when you can’t hit the escape button?
I’d like to propose a thought. Have you ever tried to do something that you didn’t think you could do? The overwhelming idea of doing something new, uncomfortable, even painful, exhausting, HARD! We often find ourselves seeking the easy way out of stressful situations or daily tasks that are just plain not fun and as the stress and tension builds its got to go somewhere.
In my personal journey over the last two years, I found myself in this predicament. Having always enjoyed cycling but not typically riding more than 1-2 hours at a time. I started riding more as an “escape”, especially when we couldn’t meet up in- or even out of doors with family, friends, and even colleagues. This morphed into 3-4 hour rides on the weekends and some early morning rides on our peloton. A few months into a somewhat regular exercise routine, a family member had been struggling with losing their job and also suffering a back injury that limited what they could do without pain. As a motivator to get them moving, and actively managing their condition, I tried to get them out riding with me. What started out as embers quickly grew into a fire. It didn’t take much before I was asked to sign up for an organized bike ride. Enter, UNPaved PA, a 125 mile, mostly off the beaten path, gravel bike ride through central Pennsylvania (local to me). To take advantage of this discounted rate, contact AOASM at [email protected] to obtain the discount code.
Can't attend a live session? NO PROBLEM! Sessions will be available on-demand shortly after each session is completed and will remain as enduring ringside medicine CME content for years to come. Registration is available at any time, and one does not to be present for the live events to obtain CME.
This course is an all-encompassing class, focusing on the basics of ringside medicine and what the ringside physician needs to know. Commissions are encouraged to advertise this opportunity to newer ringside physicians. Ringside physicians can also use the course for certification exam review.

2022 AAO & AOASM Joint Convocation
Trauma: An Osteopathic Perspective of Body, Mind, and Spirit
|
|
March 23-27, 2022, at Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida
Shawn R. Kerger, DO, FAOASM, Program Chair for AAO
Priscilla Tu, DO, FAOASM, Program Chair for AOASM
A person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit – this is a core tenet of osteopathic philosophy. This year’s convocation will review the latest updates of each of these aspects and their impacts on our patients with a history of trauma. For the first time, the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) are teaming up to explore these relationships, particularly in the athletic population. The convocation will kick off with a day of sports medicine topics; the following day will be the “Body” day, examining the physical and musculoskeletal responses to trauma. Then, the “Mind” day will focus on the neuropsychological and neuroanatomic response to trauma with a special emphasis on pain perception. The “Spirit” day will discuss the psychological aspects of trauma. The final day will incorporate all these considerations into an improved practice approach for us all.
