NEWS FROM TODAY'S BOARD WORK SESSION

This morning, the HPISD Board of Trustees discussed the ELA subcommittee's work regarding the district's approach to literacy instruction. We are happy to report that all subcommittee members agreed that the district should take the following steps:

  • Phase out Lucy Calkins Units of Study in kindergarten - 8th grade
  • Engage a consultant to guide HPISD's transition to align literacy instruction with the Science of Reading
  • Rewrite the district's current literacy framework

While we are excited about the initial steps to improve literacy instruction in our schools, there is still work to do. The HP Literacy Coalition looks forward to a continued partnership with HPISD leaders to ensure teachers have the resources they need so that every student can reach their full potential.

The process for making the proposed changes has yet to be determined, and the timeline is still being discussed. Please make sure to visit our website frequently and read forthcoming emails as we will make every effort to keep the community updated. The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, April 19th.

Thanks to all the parents and community members who have been involved with advocating for effective and proven literacy education in HPISD. Thanks also to the trustees for all of their hard work on this most important issue.
