Welcome to the Spartan Sentinel, our monthly electronic newsletter for all things DePaul Catholic.
Moving Forward
The Sentinel has become our most effective method of communication to the members of Spartan Nation, current, past and future.

It is amazing the positive response we have received over the past few years as we work to keep you updated on how we are doing. We are also interested in how you are doing. Please stay in touch.

As usual, the students are excited this week. They are looking forward to a well earned vacation from school. The seniors especially are getting itchy as the end of the year nears.

School will close after a half day on Thursday. During the morning, a group of students will perform the Living Stations of the Cross. Great work by Ms. Sevean and all the members of the Theology Department.

Kids are funny, you know. Most don’t think it is cool to be outwardly religious and then you find out that many volunteer at their church and perform other works of Christian Charity. The students of DePaul understand the events of Holy Week and the meaning of Easter Sunday.

Many students arrived at DePaul from a Catholic school and already have a solid foundation. Other students who arrived from public school have been educated in the values we at DePaul hold dear. They have learned their lessons well.

My hope for all kids is that they take a moment this week to stop, reflect and appreciate.

I hope the students in our school never feel alone, as God is always walking down the hall with them. I hope the students in our school gain strength through an understanding that prayer works.

Finally, I hope kids get a chance on Sunday to spend some time with family to celebrate that "Christ has Risen” for them and for us all.

I hope your Easter bonnet is the talk of the town!

Happy Easter!

Best and Be Well,
JM

Dear Spartan Community:

As we enter Holy Week, it is important to reflect upon this school year. Look at what we have been able to accomplish by working together and cooperating with the everchanging guidelines imposed on us and our ability to adapt and overcome. No matter the challenge, we successfully faced it head on and have been able to keep our students engaged in their academic studies.

This week we will be offering the school day SAT on Wednesday, April 13, and almost 60 members of the Junior Class will be taking this exam. In the past year or two, many colleges and universities have waived this as an entrance requirement, but as we return to a state of normalcy, this is a required component for many students applying for higher education.

The month of May is the start of the sprint towards the end of the school year. Advanced Placement exams will be administered from May 2 to 13 and Senior Final Exams are scheduled for May 23 to 26, 2022. Bishop Sweeney has granted the school a day off and the Bishop’s Holiday will be Friday, May 27, 2022, with no classes in session.

Parents will be receiving communication from me regarding changes that will be put into place effective April 25, 2022 when we return to class from the Easter recess. Please watch for communication from me related to food deliveries during the school day and adherence to the school dress code. More specific information will be forthcoming later in the week.

I pray that you have had a Lenten season that allowed for reflection and a spiritual revival and that the joy of Easter will be a blessing to you, your families, and friends. Please take some time over the Easter recess to reflect on all that God has blessed us with and that the conclusion of this school year be successful. Take the time over the break to be with your families and share each other’s company. A joyous and blessed Easter to all!

Please visit this newsletter on a regular basis to be brought up to speed on the happenings across the campus.

The Test Prep course focuses on preparing middle school students who intend to sit for a High School entrance exam. Students will navigate through the structure and setup of a variety of entrance exams and practice sample content while receiving valuable test-taking tips. Our goals are to familiarize students with possible formats, help them build confidence in their abilities, and give them a competitive advantage on test day.

News From The Theology Department
As we conclude the Lenten season and begin Holy Week, our students are engaged in learning and service.
All students have been going regularly to the chapel for the sacrament of Reconciliation and with opportunities to participate in the Stations of the Cross after school on Fridays. Some students are also preparing for the "Living Stations of the Cross" which will be prayed and presented on Holy Thursday for the entire school.

With deadlines for Christian Service submissions fast approaching, many students have been stepping up to help others. The Final Christian Service Time Log, "Completed Service Hours", (a minimum 15 hours) is due on May 6, 2022. The "Project or Essay Assignment" is the due date set by the individual theology teacher.(Please see your Theology teacher for your individual class deadline). All students must submit their service log on the MobileServe App.
Mrs. Haggerty finished the 5th Midnight Run of the year this past weekend. Once again, students packed food, sorted and distributed items to the homeless in various sites throughout New York City.

For the Sophomores, we are beginning to plan for the Cardboard City Retreat on May 6th, and the students may be asking for support in the form of pledges and donations that will help to fund the Midnight Run events in their Junior year.
The Sophomore class will have their grade level retreat on May 11th during part of the school day, and the Junior class will have a service retreat during the week of May 16th during part of the school day as well.
