LGBT History Month – LGBT History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
Filipino American History Month – In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. Filipino-Americans along with colleges and universities, museums, and community groups will be commemorating Filipino American History Month with various activities and events to bring awareness to the significant role Filipinos have played in American history.
Dyslexia & Learning Disabilities Awareness Month - October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, a time when the nation turns its attention to the one in five students who learn differently because they have Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or other learning and/or attention issues. It is a time to share tools, strategies, and initiatives to make the school year more enabling and productive for the millions of learners with specific learning disabilities.
Oct 24th – Diwali – Also known as the “Festival of Lights,” Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The name is derived from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” Festivities include sharing sweets, lighting sparklers, and creating rangolis. Every year in October or November, millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains all across the world celebrate with a five-day festival that marks one of the biggest and most important holidays of the year in India.
Oct 26th – Birth of Bab - Many followers of the Baha'i faith celebrate the Birth of the Báb. They believe the Báb helped awaken people to a new period in human history. The Báb, which translates to “the gate” in Arabic, was born on October 20, 1819 in what was then Persia, now Iran. He was a prophet and forerunner of the Bahá'í revelation. The day is a simple and joyous event that begins with prayers and devotional readings and develops into a festive social gathering either at home or in a place of worship.
Oct 28th – National First Responders Day - In 2019, the United States Senate passed a resolution designating October 28th as National First Responders Day to recognize and commemorate the heroic acts of the men and women who are first on the scene of an emergency. This day is all about showing appreciation for firefighters, EMS (EMTs, nurses, doctors, paramedics), police, emergency dispatchers, and others who risk their lives to save others.
