Rutgers' Big Chill 5K and

New Brunswick Tree Lighting

The holidays are just around the corner. Get into the holiday spirit by helping others and joining in some community fun. On December 2, attend the New Brunswick City Center Holiday Tree Lighting with live music, an ugly sweater contest, a dog costume contest, ice carving demonstrations, and more. 


On December 3, take part in one of New Brunswick's most beloved holiday traditions, The Big Chill 5K at Rutgers, celebrating its 20th year. Join thousands of participants in person or participate virtually and at your own pace. This year, proceeds from the race will benefit the No Hungry Knights Scholarship Fund.

EVENTS, PERFORMANCES, AND FILMS

On November 3, join the Zimmerli Art Museum's SparkNight Día de Los Muertos program. The evening features an exhibition highlighting talks in English and Spanish and a performance by Mariachi Hidalgo, as well as activities with the Rutgers Mexican-American Student Association and RU Voting. Free.


See Tootsie, the laugh-out-loud love letter that tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime, at The State Theatre New Jersey November 4-6.


Enjoy "A Profound Love," an online virtual concert in honor of Rutgers' Charter Day on November 10, when The Practitioners of Musick present the music and history of Queen Charlotte’s cultural world that connects the Crown with Queen’s College. Free.


Mason Gross School of the Arts presents Dance Plus November 10-12 with choreographic works by guest artists André Zachery, Kun-Yang Lin, and Michelle Manzanales, with faculty members Alfdaniels Mabingo, Ani Javian, Evelyn Wang, and John Evans at NBPAC.


Victor Manuelle makes his State Theatre debut November 11 with an evening of high-energy salsa music that will have everyone on their feet. Known as El Sonero de la Juventud (“The Singer Of Youths”), Manuelle's specialty is salsa romántica. And on November 19, Colombian salsa kings Grupo Niche return to the State Theatre New Jersey with the “Salsa Experience.” The band performs an invigorating range of uptempo dance music, as well as romantic numbers in their dazzling live shows.


Alpha Art Gallery presents “After the Charm: In the Name of Autumn,” a heart-warming watercolor exhibition that reminds people it’s time to take a deep breath and celebrate the arrival of autumn, now through January with an opening reception November 11. Free.


The annual Rutgers Jewish Film Festival continues with live and virtual award-winning international film screenings and engaging discussions with filmmakers, through November 13. 


On November 17, join the State Theatre New Jersey for a special book launch event celebrating award-winning poet and former poet-in-residence Glenis Redmond's newest poetry collection, The Listening Skin, which explores how an artist dares to dance and create through a pain-riddled body.

LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, AND WEBINARS

On November 2, Rutgers School of Public Health presents Leah Thomas, AKA Green Girl Leah, who will be sharing her life story and what drove her to advocate for environmental justice. Free.


What do ferries, steamboats, railroads, trolleys, bridges, rivers, canals, and highways have in common? They are all part of the City of New Brunswick’s history. Join the New Brunswick Free Public Library on November 3 as Professor Angus Gillespie speaks about his book, Port Newark and the Origins of Container Shipping, and how innovations at Newark changed shipping worldwide. On November 5, hear about Steamboats of New Brunswick: Great Promise, Unexpected Disappointments. Free.


Learn from Rutgers experts about Childhood Lead in New Jersey: What Everyone Should Know, November 8. This virtual program will provide a brief overview of the effects of elevated blood lead levels in children, how exposure occurs and how to prevent exposure in children. Free.


Writers at Rutgers hosts author Raven Leilani, who will read her own work, answer questions, and sign books. Leilani's book, Luster, was awarded the 2020 Kirkus Prize for Fiction, the 2020 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the 2020 John Leonard Prize at the National Book Critics Circle Awards, the 2021 Dylan Thomas Prize, and the 2021 VCU Cabell First Novelist Award. Vanity Fair correspondent Joe Pompeo speaks on his new book about the notorious local Hall-Mills Murder Case, Blood & Ink: The Scandalous Jazz Age Double Murder That Hooked America on True Crime November 10 via Zoom. Free.

On November 17, hear Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, in conversation with Mary E. O'Dowd, Executive Director of Health Systems and Population Health Integration at Rutgers, discussing "What the Eyes Don't See: Stories from the Flint Water Crisis" and how she used science to prove that children in Flint, Michigan, were exposed to lead. Free.


The Tyler Clementi Center for Diversity Education and Bias Prevention at Rutgers presents the webinar "Getting Comfortable with Pronouns," a training to provide an introductory understanding of pronoun use so participants may walk away with a better grasp on how to honor pronouns, ask the right questions, and clear up misconceptions and confusion, November 29. Free.

FOR KIDS

Join Rutgers Geology Museum November 2 for an in-person Late Night Event focusing on Ancient Egypt. Stop by to learn about mummies, pyramids, and more. Free and open to all ages.


See nine of the world's most talented 4-legged performers in an uproariously funny, comedy dog spectacular that is leaving audiences everywhere howling for more at Mutts Gone Nuts, November 13, at the State Theatre New Jersey.

Art Together is the Zimmerli Art Museum's monthly drop-in family art-making workshop series. Join the fun on November 13 for a new project inspired by the exhibition "Stand Up! 10 Mighty Women Who Made a Change" while spending quality time together. Free.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Single game tickets are on sale for the last two home games of the 2022 Rutgers Football season, Michigan on November 5 and Penn State on November 19. 


Rutgers Basketball is back this month. Some games are already sold out, so don't wait to get your piece of the action.


Rutgers hosts the qualifying competition for the Road to CECC 2023 E-Sports U Competition November 4-6 at the E-Sports Center on the Busch Campus. The event will feature East Coast teams competing in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Rocket League, Valorant, and Overwatch 2.


The USA Weighlifting Level 1 Coaching Certification Course takes place November 12-13 at the Rutgers College Avenue Gym. Learn about lifting techniques, coaching cues, and much more.


Become a certified spinning instructor November 12 at Rutgers Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. This live course covers the practical knowledge and skills needed to become a Certified Spinning® Instructor and lead your own classes in any of the 35,000+ Spinning® Facilities worldwide.

SCIENCE AND NATURE

Rutgers Gardens, a 180-acre botanic garden adjacent to the Cook Campus with designed gardens, farms, plant collections, and natural habitats to explore, is open to visitors Tuesday-Sunday. Admission is free.


Cook's Market at Rutgers Gardens continues each Friday through November 18, featuring more than 20 specialty vendors. Check Facebook for weekly vendors and specials.

COVID-19 RESOURCES

Keep our community healthy! COVID-19 testing is available in various locations throughout New Brunswick every Tuesday during November. Community members can receive a free COVID-19 vaccine November 29 at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC).


Middlesex County has a variety of vaccination and testing sites. Vaccines are available to all county residents regardless of immigration or insurance status. They are FREE, no I.D. is required, and it’s strictly confidential. Eligibility information for the vaccine can be found here.


Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics has a website with multilingual resources about COVID-19 vaccines for children and young adults. Resources are available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog, Hindi, and Korean, the top six languages spoken in New Jersey.

AROUND TOWN

Bring joy to the children at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital with a virtual toy drive through December 25, which supports The Child Life Program, making the hospital experience a positive one. Hundreds of motorcyclists will hit the road November 7 and travel to the hospital to bring holiday cheer and deliver toys for pediatric patients.


Attend the Middlesex County Job and Resource Fair November 16, including special programs for veterans at Middlesex County College.


New Brunswick Free Public Library's English Conversation Groups for intermediate and advanced speakers are being offered virtually Tuesday and Thursday evenings through December 15. Free.


Registration is open for Rutgers-New Brunswick Winter Session 2023. Take a winter course while saving money with in-state tuition and stay on track for graduation.
