Martiz Ware, Director – Veteran Services
Martiz Ware
Hello all, my name is Martiz Ware, Director of Veterans Services, and it is both an honor and a privilege to be highlighted in the Black Scholars Community Newsletter. Service to my community and my country runs deep in my blood. My Father worked for the Harford County, Maryland Board of Education for over 40 years. My Mother, who was a Domestic Worker volunteered to cook and clean for the elderly in our community, and at 91 still visits the local nursing home weekly to read the Bible to many who are younger than she. Two of my older brothers served in the Army with my eldest surviving Vietnam. I highlight these heroes in my family because they showed me how to serve with honor, and that no level of service is too small or too big.

I joined the Army right out of High school and in a few years, I found myself gazing at the desert night sky on the borders of Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. I prayed each day that I and all my brothers and sisters in arms would make it home safely. Unfortunately, not everyone made it back. In times of war, service to one’s country becomes service to the entire world. Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Guardians put their lives on the line for the freedoms that many of us enjoy, and for the freedoms, many others in the world are seeking. The Bible says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) But, war takes its toll on even the strongest minds, and not everyone who returns is whole physically or mentally. I spent the last few years ministering on Skid Row, Los Angeles. The estimated population in a 0.4 square mile area is 8,000 to 11,000 people and 20% of the population are veterans who suffer from substance abuse and/or mental illness. Sadly, a large percentage are predominantly Black males.

As Director of Veterans Services here at Long Beach State, I am passionate about serving those who served. I see many opportunities to work with our senior administration, faculty, and staff to get our Veterans off the streets and into classrooms and/or prevent one from ending up on the streets. Many Veterans are not aware of all the benefits and services that are available. The Veterans Services Team are on the frontlines, advocating and making sure that our Vets, Active-Duty Military, and their families get what they deserve for all that they have done for us and our great country. Now that we are getting back on campus, they need us more than ever and you can be a VetNet Ally. For More information about the services, we provide to our military community please go to our website: www.csulb.edu/veterans. You can also contact me directly with any questions or ideas of how we can better serve our Veterans on campus at: Martiz.Ware@csulb.edu.
