Embracing an Attitude of Gratitude

gratitude_attitude.jpg

November is National Gratitude Month, and we're grateful for the partnerships that allow us to improve the lives of Contra Costa County job seekers and support employers so their businesses can thrive.

We look forward to continuing this work in the coming year as our board works to implement four key strategies to help build a strong, inclusive workforce:

  • Creating and expanding "earn and learn" models.
  • Addressing and serving the county's most vulnerable populations and communities.
  • Developing a community business resource center focusing on small, minority and microbusinesses.
  • Incorporating race, equity, diversity and inclusion (REDI) principles in all business outreach strategies.

Loftin Dental Appreciates HR Hotline

The HR Hotline is a no-cost resource for Contra Costa County employers to answer labor law questions. Zulay Loftin of Loftin Dental Family and Cosmetic Dentistry appreciates the HR Hotline so much that she includes information about it in her email signature line.

Here's what Zulay had to say about the HR Hotline:

"I've used the HR Hotline a couple of times now. I'm never on hold for more than a minute or two. The professionals who answer the phone are courteous, smart and thorough in their explanations. They have been so consistently great that I even have the HR Hotline number in my email signature line and tell my colleagues about it whenever it comes up. So even when you've been working within HR for over 20 years, it's still nice to have a professional HR rep to check in with to make sure there haven't been any law changes/updates. The folks with the HR Hotline give me an added level of confidence in my HR-related decisions as they relate to my family-owned business." - Zulay Loftin

Jobseeker Success:

Cuban Refugee Finds Way

to Support Family Back Home

When Daynee Hernandez-Serpa fled her home in Cuba for the United States, she had no friends or family to assist her. She had just completed her bachelor's degree in physical therapy in Cuba, but when she tried to further her education here, she met nothing but closed doors.

To improve her job prospects, Daynee enrolled in ESL classes through Rubicon Programs. Her bilingual career coach Diana Bonilla told her about WIOA, and Daynee's dreams started to take flight. She applied for and was accepted into the phlebotomy program at Vasco Career College, which is working with her unique educational background.

As the sole provider for her family of four in Cuba, 24-year-old Daynee hopes to further her medical career and looks forward to the day when she can bring her whole family to the United States.

"I can't express enough what I feel," Daynee said. "I am so blessed to be going to school, and now I can help my family in Cuba!"
