The risk of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth is almost 4 times higher than for youth who don’t identify as LGBTQ+. If that surprises you, the cause of the increase will be even more shocking. Today we talk with Dr. Amy Green from The Trevor Project as she reveals the findings of the 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health and discusses what we, as a society, can do to reduce the risk of LGBTQ+ youth suicide.

More researchers have become interested in examining culture-specific experiences relevant to the study and treatment of suicide risk in youth. Despite earlier calls for cultural considerations in youth suicideracial and ethnic minorities are not well represented in suicide studies, and this has kept us from being able to understand the cultural context of youth suicide risk. These unanswered calls, unfortunately, may have contributed to critical oversights in the mental health needs of racial and ethnic minority youth at risk for suicide.

Community Group
Samaritans works to prevent suicide and support those who have lost someone to suicide. Each year, 300+ volunteers answer more than 80,000 calls, texts, and chats on our Helpline.
