WMC Foundation’s Future Wisconsin Project addresses our state’s long-term systemic, economic challenges. With partner representation from business, government and education, this program seeks to bring all stakeholders of the economy to the table to develop solutions we can all implement. Last year, the project released Wisconsin 2035 to detail the challenges facing Wisconsin’s business community and propose potential solutions for long-standing economic growth. The publication identifies the workforce shortage as the biggest problem facing Wisconsin’s business community, and how to tackle it through attraction, retention and expansion. The Future Wisconsin Summit is the yearlong culmination of the project’s work and its impact on the direction of our state’s economy.

Main Street Bounceback Grant updates!

Gov. Tony Evers recently announced that an additional $25 million will be invested into the Main Street Bounceback Grant Program, bringing the governor’s total investment into the program to $100 million.

Gov. Evers’ Main Street Bounceback program, which provides $10,000 to recipients to help them move or expand into vacant commercial spaces, has now supported more than 6,600 small businesses and nonprofits in communities in all 72 counties in Wisconsin.

The deadline to apply for a Main Street Bounceback Grant has been extended to December 31, 2022. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all the funds are disbursed.

Grant funds are available as part of the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) and distributed by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) regional partners. Businesses must apply through the partner organization for the region in which they are located.

The program is open to new or existing businesses opening a new location or expanding operations in a vacant commercial property where the lease commences, or sales contract closes, on or after January 1, 2021, and on or before December 31, 2022.

Additional information about the Main Street Bounce Back Grants is available here: https://wedc.org/programs-and-resources/mainstreet-bounceback-grants/.

Contact Heike if you are applying for the grant and need an Acknowledgement Letter.

Each year The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program awards over $203,500 in college scholarships. The local post is the entry portal for the national contest. Since 1938, when the contest was started, only two Wisconsin students have earned top national honors. There is no reason a Wisconsin student from DeForest couldn’t do it in 2023. The department’s [state level] 2023 contest is scheduled for February 11, 2023. To qualify for the department contest, the successful candidate must compete at the post, county, and district competitions.
Each contestant must research and write a prepared and memorized oration 8-10 minutes in length which must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. A second shorter speech of three to five minutes on a pre-determined assigned topic is also a part of the contest. The Assigned Topics for 2023 Oratorical Contest are, the sixth amendment, the tenth amendment, Section 1 of the fourteenth amendment, and the sixteenth amendment. The topic of the assigned speech will be selected at the time of the contest and each speaker will be given five minutes notice as to which one was drawn. In summary, the student will give two speeches, a prepared speech of eight to ten minutes and a more extemporaneous speech of three to five minutes. Each contestant is judged using pre-determined criteria.
