Why is there an extra Early Release Day at the end of the school year? Our previous calendar only had one Early Release Day for elementary students (on the last day of school) and two Early Release Days for secondary (on the last two days of school for finals).
One of the snow days experienced this year (January 10) was a scheduled Early Release Day for all grade levels. Because students and staff only missed about a half day of instruction, only a half day will be made up. This means secondary students will have three Early Release Days at the end of the year (May 30, June 2 and June 3) and elementary and early childhood will have two Early Release Days (June 2 and June 3). If the District experiences additional snow days this school year, the Early Release Days will move forward.
Can the two Early Release Days be combined into one full day so the school year can end earlier?
Unfortunately, no. Senate Bill 727 requires that school districts maintain a calendar with 169 student attendance days in order to be eligible for additional state funding. Combining two half days into one full day would result in a calendar with only 168 student attendance days - one day short of the state requirement.
Can the District utilize additional AMI Days if needed?
No. Missouri only allows 36 hours of Alternative Methods of Instruction to be used each school year. A regular instructional day at FHSD is about 6 1/2 hours, so we are limited to five AMI days.
