Manufacturing Day Returns to NW Illinois
Northwest Illinois Economic Development (NWILED), in partnership with Jo Daviess
Carroll Career Technical Education Academy (CTEA), and Jo-Carroll Energy, is pleased to announce that Manufacturing Day 2022 is planned for Wednesday, April 6. It is an occasion during which
manufacturers open their doors to showcase the potential of modern manufacturing and foster interest in manufacturing careers. All high schools in Carroll and Jo Daviess Counties, plus Lena-
Winslow in Stephenson, are participating and together are sending approximately 300 students to 16 different manufacturers and logistics companies across Northwest Illinois for site visits. Additionally,
CTEA will offer students various learning sessions presented by local businesses.
USDA Grant Programs
The Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) funds projects that develop, coordinate and expand local and regional food business enterprises that engage as intermediaries in indirect producer to consumer marketing to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products. Grants can be used for the planning stages of establishing or expanding a local and regional food business enterprise or to improve or expand a food business that supports locally and regionally produced agricultural products and food system infrastructure by performing feasibility studies, market research, training and technical assistance for the business enterprise and/or for producers working with the business enterprise. A 25% match is required.


The Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) funds projects that develop, coordinate and expand direct producer-to-consumer markets to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products by developing, coordinating, expanding, and providing outreach, training, and technical assistance to domestic farmers markets, roadside stands, community-supported agriculture programs, agritourism activities, online sales or other direct producer-to-consumer (including direct producer-to-retail, direct producer-to-restaurant and direct producer-to-institutional marketing) market opportunities. A 25% match is required.

Spring Centerpieces – Join Nikki Keltner, University of Illinois Extension Program Coordinator, for Spring Centerpieces on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office, 204 Vine St. Elizabeth, IL 61028. There will be a $20 fee to attend this program and pre-registration is required as seating is limited. This hands on workshop will walk you through the basics of cut flower arranging. Participants will use what they learn about flower arranging to create a spring themed centerpiece that they will take home with them. All of the materials needed will be provided.


4-H Fun Day-The 2022 Jo Daviess County 4-H Fun Day will be held on Friday, April 15, 2022, at the Elizabeth Community Building located in Elizabeth, IL. Sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension, this event will include hands-on learning activities that will have kids DOINGTHINKING, and CREATING! 4-H Fun Day is open to any child currently in the 3rd-12th grade. This event will be offered at no cost to families. Everyone is welcome, so grab a friend! Participants do NOT need to be 4-H members to participate.
 
Participants will enjoy rotating between three different workshops. During the “Egg-Cellent Breakfast” workshop, participants will learn to make omelets and other breakfast goodies. The “Hydro-Dipping” workshop will teach participants a unique process using water and paint filament to create a project of their own! The final workshop will be “Woodworking Fun”. During this time, participants will combine woodworking and games by making a tabletop tiki toss game to take home with them.
 
“Our annual 4-H Fun Day is one of my favorite events of the year and we are thrilled to be able to offer this to youth once again,” says Angela Miller, 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator. “Participants will leave this event with new skills and something to take home that they can be proud of.”

Understanding how diet and lifestyle influence the inflammation process- Inflammation is the body’s natural response to stressors. Understanding what causes inflammation and how you can better manage it is the first step to improving your overall health. Many lifestyle choices contribute to the inflammation response. However, by making small changes in our everyday lives, we can decrease the risk of inflammation and better manage it. Join Diane Reinhold, Nutrition and Wellness Educator from University of Illinois Extension, to learn what steps you can take to fight inflammation. During this workshop, we will discuss the impact of diet, physical activity, and stress management on the inflammation process.
 
Understanding Inflammation and How Diet Influences the Inflammation Process will be held on Tuesday, April 12, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau, 210 W Spring St, Freeport. Cannot join us in person? Then join us virtually! Wednesday, April 13, from 1:00- 3:00 PM, via Zoom. There is no cost to attend this program, however, seating is limited, and pre-registration is required. The deadline for registration for both events is Monday, April 11, 2022.
