With heavy hearts and great sadness, we mourn the loss of the extraordinary life of Jean Fabian Torongo. Our beloved Jean passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023. Jean was a model of love, compassion, and generosity.
It is only fitting that Jean headlines this section, as it highlights our history. Jean was filled to the brim with Pickering Manor historical facts and stories! Jean’s relationship with Pickering Manor began not long after Pickering was founded in 1963. Jean proudly served as a board member and past Board President of the Pickering Manor Auxiliary. Jean was instrumental in co-orchestrating many successful events that directly benefitted the residents of Pickering Manor. Some of these annual events included: Ladies Tea, Fashion Shows, Charity Balls, Block Parties and so much more!
Jean also assumed the role of Pickering’s historian; she would collect and carefully arrange Pickering Manor news articles, materials, and pictures in beautiful leather-bound scrapbooks. Additionally, she would participate in lectures, always delightfully sharing Pickering Manor’s history with the community. If you asked Jean anything about Pickering, she would know it! Her legacy and loving spirit at Pickering Manor will last for generations to come.
Jean’s love and charity was felt strongly throughout the Pickering community. Jean was a very special person to Pickering Manor, not just to the staff but to the residents as well. Some of our fondest memories are Jean’s cookies! Living next door, in the Pickering Cottages, Jean would frequently grace the neighborhoods of Pickering delivering her famous raspberry shortbread cookies for all the residents and staff to enjoy. After delivering cookies, she would never miss volunteering for a Bingo session or throwing a great social hour for the residents, hesitantly letting us take lots of pictures of her volunteering. She was always a team player! After all, she is a significant part of our history, and we can’t wait to put those pictures in our scrapbooks.
We love you, Jean! It is difficult saying goodbye, but we know your legacy at Pickering will live on forever, and you will remain forever in our hearts.
