Red Flag Warning in effect; drivers take extra precautions

Dry, warm, windy conditions in Oregon and Washington are creating an increased risk of fire danger, and motorists in particular are urged to take extra precautions.

According to the USDA Forest Service, sparks from equipment and vehicles are one of the leading causes of wildfires. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning through Saturday (Sept. 10). Drivers are urged to take precautions including:

  • Stay on pavement or other hard surfaces when pulling off the road. Do not pull over onto grassy areas that could ignite from hot exhaust.
  • Bring your cell phone to report any fires or dangerous activity.
  • Stay on the road. Off-road driving is often prohibited during fire season.
  • Carry a fire extinguisher, shovel and water. Be prepared to extinguish small fires.
  • Check your tire pressure. Driving on rims could cause sparking.
  • Make sure tow chains aren't dragging. They can also cause sparks.

Visit the National Weather Service for updates.

Weight limit placed on 170th Avenue Bridge

A weight limit on the 170th Avenue bridge over Beaverton Creek was approved by the Washington County Board of Commissioners during its regular meeting Tuesday.

This restriction comes after a load rating by the Oregon Department of Transportation determined a restriction was needed. Posted weight limits are enforced by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Motor Carrier Officers.

The weight limit will stay until the bridge is repaired or replaced. The bridge is included in the 170th Avenue project to build new sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, street lighting and a center turn lane from Alexander Street to Merlo Road. The project has only received funding for design and right-of-way acquisition.

Of Washington County’s 184 bridges, 13 are now weight limited. The bridges are safe for vehicles not exceeding the posted weight limits.
