Random Lottery Numbers

Many families are wondering how and where to view their random number in MySchools after they start their application. Once the application has been started, an applicant can log into MySchools and click "edit profile" in the small font just above the student's name. Scroll down to find the random number.

In addition families may have questions about what their random lottery number means and according to high school enrollment:

Random numbers, on their own, cannot definitively tell you your chances of getting into any specific program. In order to do so, you would need to know the random numbers of all other students applying to that same program and how your random number compares to those applicants' numbers. Here’s why:

• The strength of your random number depends on who else applied. 
• While the matching algorithm runs, some students who apply to the same program as you will match to a higher choice from their applications. This means they are never actually considered for a seat at that program.
• For example, on a list of 100 applicants to a program, your random number may place you at #75. During the match, it’s possible that 30 students with a stronger random number match to a more preferred choice, meaning that your actual position would jump to #45. With tens of thousands of applicants and hundreds of programs, this is pretty common.

• Eligibilities and priorities matter. 
• Many schools are open only to specific applicants (such as students who live or go to school in that same district or borough) and/or use priority groups, which means that these schools make offers to some groups of students before other groups.
• In these cases, all students from a program's first priority group get offers before any students from the second priority group, regardless of random number.
• If there are more applicants than seats in a priority group, the random number is used to determine offers to individual students within that priority group.

Diversity in Admissions: 

Schools across New York City are participating in an initiative to increase diversity within their schools. Some schools give an admissions priority to applicants who are low-income, English Language Learners (ELLs) or Emerging Multilingual Learners (EMLs), are in the child welfare system or live in temporary housing. A complete list of schools and their priorities is below. Participating schools will still make offers using standard admissions priorities.

As you know eighth grade students are all in the process of applying to high schools.  The guidance department is here to support parents and students as they navigate this process. 

Ms. Adames, Ms. Jalayer, Ms. Schleifer and Ms. McEvily from the guidance department will be assisting families.  Please sign up for the appropriate conference, based on your students' class.

***We understand the importance of the HS meetings to families. In order to ensure all families are supported, please be sure to sign up with your correct class, otherwise this can result in a cancellation of your appointment. Also please make sure to include your phone number when signing up for your appointment 

We have instituted procedures to ensure that we provide support in an efficient and equitable manner.

• Families may request ONE fifteen minute phone conference with a member of the Guidance Department.
• All appointments will be set up via our online sign up system-SignUpGenius (directions and details are provided on the back of this letter). 
• In order to sign up, you must know your child’s homeroom class. If you are unsure of your child’s homeroom, please ask your child, look in Jupiter and/or your child’s schedule. 
• Appointments will begin promptly at the listed start time and finish fifteen minutes later. 

Start and end times for conferences are fixed and cannot be revised due to lateness. It is essential that all families be prepared for their set phone conference. Please make sure to be available (and to have any questions and a list of schools you are considering), in order to make the best use of our meeting time.
