Wednesday Nov 2d, 2022
No Host Bar: 5:30 p.m., Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.
In 2009 Eric Lindner became a hospice volunteer, helping patients cope with the reality of dying. His book Hospice Voices: Lessons for Living at the End of Life was critically acclaimed by leading doctors and caregivers, NPR, BBC, Washington Independent Review of Books, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist’s Rebecca Vnuk, who named it one of 2013’s five best memoirs.
Since 2015 the attorney, businessman, and DC native has been teaching Ethics in Action at Georgetown University, a course that dissects the NASA Challenger disaster. He’s married to Captain Murray’s daughter; they live on California’s Central Coast.
Eric will be talking about one of the most remarkable sagas in the history of commercial aviation, a riveting and inspiring air-sea ordeal at the height of the Cold War. He details Captain John Murray's epic story of survival and heroism when crash landing in the Atlantic Ocean, a story that stunned the world.
Dinner is catered and open to the public ($25/person), reservations are required prior to 6 p.m., Monday prior to dinner, either On-line HERE or call 805 296-1935.

First shown at our 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Live Auction, you need to check out this rendering of our planned expansion for the new property just to the west of the current museum.
We are currently seeking sponsors and partners to come along side of Estrella Warbirds Museum and help us make this a reality. Ten acres of land has already been provided by the City of Paso Robles for the expansion. At this point, we have already received funding to cover the underground utility/improvements required, i.e., sewage, water, gas, and electrical. If you would like to assist, we would love to talk with you concerning this endeavor.

We went into the evening holding our collective breath. The food was great and the live music was perfect. Hangar 1 was dressed to the nines. It looked really good. Cody Dawson, our auctioneer, did a fabulous job. The crowd really got into it. For example, we offered a NASCAR experience at either Fontana or Phoenix including hotel accommodations. This was a Charity Ace offering. The “reserve” was $1750. Cody ended up with a bidding war and sold the experience three times for a total of about $16K. Sinton Helicopter donated a sightseeing trip with stops at Oso Libre and Brecon for wine tastings. The was all donated so it all goes towards our expanstion. That went for $5K. All in all, we were pretty pleased at how it turned out. Sherm Smoot's death caused us to push the pause button until Laurie Smoot said it was what Sherm wanted, so it was then catch up a bit. That night we raised nearly $60,000 towards our planned expansion. Thank you everyone! Click on the above image for more pictures.

Peter Snyder and Betty Miller played guest host and guide to a bevy of antique cars and their owners representing the Horseless Carriages of America during the latter part of October. Estrella Warbirds Museum continues to be one of the more popular destinations for car groups from all over the county and California. Most of these cars are older than any of the aircraft in the collection (and even all the humans present), with all running strong. It was an amazing site to see!

Rebuilding and restoring museum artifacts can be a real challenge, especially when you see some of them in the original received condition. How fast can you rebuild this race car?

Highlights From the Woodland Auto Display
|
|
Kara Hendrick started racing at the age of 9 and by 22 she had become the most successful female drive in USAC history!
Earlier this month, Tom Baird, Sr., of Portland, Oregon, had won at a charity benefit, a replica of the 1/4 midget that Kara used to race in early in her career. Tom felt it appropriate, rather than keeping the vehicle, to donate it to a museum where other race fans could view it. So be made plans and brought it to the Woodland Auto Display to show alongside Kara's 3/4 midget race car.
