CSU Pueblo in the News

CSU Pueblo partners with TheDream. US to assist Dreamer Students

CSU Pueblo is the newest partner college to join TheDream.US network of schools that serve undocumented migrant students. This partnership provides scholarship opportunities to cover tuition and fees for undocumented students in Southern Colorado. The university is the first Colorado institution of higher education located outside of the Denver area to receive the designation.

“We are excited to partner with Colorado State University Pueblo in supporting Colorado Dreamers in their college and career aspirations,” President of TheDream.US Candy Marshall said. “Despite the many obstacles they face, these immigrant students continue to persevere and work hard to achieve their education and career goals. Their successes are proof that expanding Dreamers’ access to higher education and career opportunities is good for our country’s economic growth. We are grateful to Colorado State University Pueblo, and our other Partner Colleges across the United States, for giving our immigrant youth the opportunity to pursue a college education and contribute to the future of America.”

IT Security: QR Codes: A Growing Vulnerability to Cyber Crimes

On behalf of Information Technology - Information Security

Consumer technologies continue to become increasingly innovative. While they often make our lives better, these new technologies give cyber criminals new ways to threaten our privacy and steal our identities. As QR codes continue to grow in popularity, cyber criminals have begun to use them to conduct their malicious attacks.

Smartphones make QR code scanning easy. By simply pointing the phone’s camera at the QR code, consumers can access promotions, see restaurant menus, access digital tickets, and more. However, not all QR codes are legitimate.

The FBI has issued warnings about cyber criminals tampering with QR codes to steal users’ login and financial information. After scanning a QR code, victims can be directed to a website disguised as legitimate but that gathers identity information and inserts digital infections.

NEW: NSF Funding Opportunity: Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program)

On behalf of Research Development

The NSF HSI program aims to enhance the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students pursuing associates or baccalaureate degrees in STEM. Projects must include strategies that support building capacity at the University through innovative approaches: to incentivize institutional and community transformation; to promote fundamental research (i) on engaged student learning, (ii) about what it takes to diversify and increase participation in STEM effectively, and (iii) that improves our understanding of how to build institutional capacity at HSIs. The outcomes of the HSI Program include broadening the participation of historically underrepresented students in STEM and expanding students' pathways to continued STEM education and integration into the STEM workforce. The program accepts proposals in three tracks; however, faculty members at our University have been most successful with the Track 2 program. Track 2 or Implementation and Evaluation Projects (IEP) supports the implementation of the evidence-based unit-, department-, or multi-department-level activities that will enhance the quality of undergraduate STEM education. These projects may design and implement a new educational practice or practices and/or adapt/replicate evidence-based practices that are already known to be effective. In addition to the core research of the proposed project, all tracks may support faculty research that is inter-, multi-, or trans-disciplinary, discipline-specific research, STEM education research, discipline-based STEM education research, or broadening participation research. Research may be based at their home institution, an NSF-funded research center, another institution of higher education, and/or a national laboratory. 2023 Application deadlines: February 8, 2023, and August 30, 2023.
