Message from CEO - Alumni Power

Often when I'm out in the community and tell people I serve with Junior Achievement, people's eyes light up as they tell me about their JA experience as a young student. They remember every detail - the name of their student company, their product, how many they sold, or their position in the company. But most of all, they tell me about the impact the JA program and volunteers had on their lives and how it influenced their futures. Here’s one powerful story of how JA changed Ty'ron’s life.

January is JA Alumni Month! It’s a time to celebrate the 1.1 million Broward/south Palm Beach students who have experienced the impact and transformation of Junior Achievement programs since our inception in 1959. JA alumni have started new businesses, studied at leading universities, won election to political offices, propelled to senior management positions and invented products! We are proud to be a part of their success!

According to a recent JA alumni study conducted by JA USA and Ipsos, alumni report that JA:

  • Opened their lives to new career paths (88%)
  • Motivated them to learn (91%)
  • Positively influenced their decision to pursue higher education (84%)
  • Helped with their financial literacy (84%)
  • Influenced their decision to start a business (51%)

We want to hear your JA story. Our students need to hear your story! Are you ready to Pay it Forward?

Sincerely,

Laurie Sallarulo, President & CEO

Board Takeover Day at JA World

Amongst the criteria for JA board membership, passion is number one. Fueling the passion of our board members is an ongoing goal and one way we do this is by engaging them in our programs. When board members have the chance to see, hear and feel the impact on our students, they are likely to be stronger advocates for our mission.

This month, Junior Achievement of South Florida’s Board of Directors participated in a “Board Takeover Day.” Twenty-eight members volunteered in JA Finance Park with 8th graders from William E. Dandy Middle School. The board members helped the students better understand how to create and manage a budget and taught them about career paths across industries.

“I was already passionate about JA, and now after volunteering, I’m fully committed to the mission of preparing students for careers! It was so great I’m bringing my team to get involved! If you want to influence and impact our next generation, come join us.” ~ Georgie Brown, President, BrandStar Sports & Entertainment

PBS Features JA on Episode of “Your South Florida”

Film crews spent the day at JA World interviewing members of the JA team including President and CEO, Laurie Sallarulo, Annejeanette Washington Collins, a teacher from Ramblewood Middle School, Alexander Noda, a loyal JA volunteer from Synovus Bank and several students. Volunteers are Changing the Game

The Super Bowl is fast approaching. Imagine for a moment that one of the teams lost their quarterback. They bring you in as the starter. You might feel a bit nervous, maybe even frightened! You have no passing skills, no equipment, no practice, no relationships with the team and have had no coaching. Likely your team will not win the game.

Imagine now, you are 18 years old and we send you into the game of life and work without the skills, coaches, practice, equipment or connections. Chances are you will struggle to succeed.

JA is all about preparing youth for the game. It's our core focus! To compete, young people need the skills, resources, mentors, practice, experience and connections. They need us to level the playing field and change the game.

It's Gametime! Are you a Gamechanger?
