P-EBT Information
Craven County Schools families may be eligible to receive Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT), a benefit that will be issued on an EBT card to assist families. This benefit program was approved by the United States Department of Agriculture to help eligible families buy food during the COVID-19 pandemic. The P-EBT card can be used like a debit card to buy food from any retailer that accepts the EBT Card.
Children who are certified for free or reduced-price meals at school in the 2020-2021 school year are eligible to receive P-EBT benefits. We understand since all children who attend Craven County Schools are currently receiving FREE meals through the National Waiver that most families have not submitted a free and reduced application for this school year. We highly encourage all families to submit an application to see if you are eligible since you will receive the P-EBT funds unless you have an approved application on file for this year.
Children who attend a school participating in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) do not have to submit an application. These schools are: James W. Smith Elementary, JT Barber Elementary, Oaks Road Academy, Roger Bell New Tech Academy, Trent Park Elementary, Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary, Havelock Elementary School, Havelock Middle School, HJ Mac Donald Middle School, West Craven Middle, and West Craven High. Students enrolled in our CEP schools will automatically receive the P-EBT card since they do not have to submit an application form to receive free or reduced-priced meals.
“Craven County Schools is committed to providing nutritional meals to our students when they need it most,” shares Lauren Weyand, CCS Director of School Nutrition. “The P-EBT is another resource to help our school community during this time of hardship.”
The completed application must be submitted by January 31, 2021.

Dear Parents:
As we return to school this week for in-person learning we need your assistance so our children are able to safely stay in school. Out of an abundance of caution, please adhere to the following guidelines from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services:
● If your child is experiencing any symptoms to include fever, chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new cough, new loss of taste or smell, your child needs to stay home as do other household members, including siblings. You should contact your child’s health care provider and the school nurse to discuss next steps.
● If your child has been in close contact (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) in the last 14 days with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 they need to stay home. Your child can return to school 14 days after the last time they had close contact with the person who has COVID-19. Please contact your child’s school nurse for further information.
● If your child has pending COVID-19 test results, or someone else in the household has pending COVID-19 test results, all household members must stay home and quarantine until results are received. This is true whether or not your child has symptoms. Please contact the school nurse for further information.
If you are unsure of any of these recommendations or need guidance to COVID-19 related questions, your child’s school nurse is an excellent resource and is available to help. Please contact your child’s school.

Havelock High School Rams Ascend with Career, College, and Wellness Center

The Havelock High School counseling team is proud to announce the opening of The Ascent. The Ascent is a career, college, and wellness center which provides students a safe, calm space for both academic and personal growth. Counselor Andrea Howard believes that Aristotle said it best when he said, “When students feel safe and supported, they are truly ready to learn”. The mission of The Ascent seeks to do just that by encouraging emotional management, promoting mental health awareness, and supporting students’ post-secondary goals. Students will have the opportunity to engage in everything from restorative problem solving and mindfulness activities to career assessment tools and college planning. Due to COVID restrictions, The Ascent has only been utilized by small groups of students on a scheduled basis thus far. However, the entire school community will benefit from this engaging space and its resources later in the school year.
The counseling team is looking forward to bringing the outside world in as well. Plans are being made for guest speakers with information including internship opportunities, community resources, CFNC representatives and more. Local industry partners are welcome to contact the counseling team to discuss possible visits to The Ascent. Partnerships such as these will lead to well-balanced, successful students.
While the name might seem unusual for some, it makes perfect sense to the Havelock Community. Rams are known for their excellent climbing skills and won’t stop until they reach unheard-of heights. The Havelock Rams are no different and the entire HHS team looks forward to supporting them along The Ascent.

National School Counseling Week 2021, “School Counselors: All in for All Students,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 1–5, 2021, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
Be sure to show your child's school counselor your appreciation for all they do the week of February 1st-5th!
