Elementary Schools Celebrate Fall
East Hills and Harbor Hill—in coordination with the PFA— hosted a day of pumpkin picking for elementary students on Thursday, October 27, 2022. Everyone had tons of fun choosing a sugar pumpkin to take home for Halloween.
Roslyn School District participated in Unity Day on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to wear orange to prevent bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
HEIGHTS SCHOOL
Heights hosted Fire Prevention Week in October with a special visit from the Roslyn Fire Department. Students learned all about fire safety and had a chance to go inside the firetruck.
EAST HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
One of the many highlights of being in fifth grade at East Hills Elementary School is becoming a buddy to the new second graders arriving from Heights School. The buddy program allows the fifth graders to mentor and serve as role models, and the second graders are thrilled to have an older friend to look up to, confide in, and play with. Each year, the second grade and fifth grade teachers pair up to create fun and engaging activities for the children to do together. They meet once a month to create seasonal projects and foster friendships.
East Hills hosted a two-day book fair, followed by a family night on October 19, 2022. It was a great opportunity for students to shop with their classmates and find new books to further their love of reading.
HARBOR HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Fifth-grade students at Harbor Hill Elementary School began the school year with a variety of STEM projects that encouraged teamwork.
Ms. Palladino's second grade class at Harbor Hill Elementary School learned about the festival of Diwali from a class parent, Ms. Goyal, who visited the school to read a book about the story of Diwali: The Festival of Lights. The students also enjoyed painting and decorating diyas—small pottery bowls with tea lights. To finish off the presentation, Ms. Goyal brought in a sweet treat for each student.
ROSLYN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students, faculty, and staff at Roslyn Middle School participated in Pink Out Day in support of breast cancer awareness month.
In support of the sport health course at Roslyn Middle School, the Roslyn Athletics Department invited Chuck English, a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, to discuss careers as a lawyer in sports and technology. He spoke about the necessary steps in becoming a lawyer, and the different pathways such as, agent, coach, executive, and contract negotiator.
Faculty & Staff Halloween Contest

Roslyn Middle School hosted their second annual Faculty & Staff Costume Contest. At the end of the day students voted for their favorites.

Student Halloween Party
On the evening of Thursday, October 27, 2022, Roslyn Middle School hosted their Halloween dance for students. Everyone had a spook-tacular time!
ROSLYN HIGH SCHOOL
Roslyn High School’s student government, the Organization of Class Councils (OCC) hosted a Breakfast Meet and Greet in the high school cafeteria courtyard during second period on Friday, October 14, 2022 to get to know nearly thirty new students who moved into the district this academic year. 
Roslyn High School student Brian Song was honored by Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena for developing an app that identifies plants at Clark Botanic Garden—a 12-acre green space in Roslyn Heights. The app is a merging of Brian’s avid interest in both botany and technology. Presently, he is enrolled in AP Computer Science A, AI: Cybersecurity and Beyond—a post-AP level course, and conducts plant research under the mentorship of Dr. Allyson Weseley, Coordinator of Research at Roslyn School District.
Medical Career Day 
Roslyn High School hosted their first Medical Career Day for students on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. A team of health care professionals from North Shore University Hospital Northwell Health hosted sixteen presentations with a robust list of topics. More than 40 tables were set up in the main gym to allow students time during their physical education and science lab classes to speak with professionals and explore different careers.
On Thursday, October 13, 2022, sixteen Roslyn High School students were inducted into the International Thespian Honor Society. The induction ceremony included student performances, reflections, and the Thespian Oath of Acceptance. 
Ten Roslyn High School seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: Sayem Kamal, Kristi Lam, Moses Lee, Amanda Lerner, Belinda Lin, Simone Mashaal, Isabella Pozo, Mac Schwartz, Wayne Shih, and Maxx Yung.
Roslyn High School is presently hosting a Speakers Bureau in coordination with the Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA) for students enrolled in legal history class. NCBA members generously volunteer their time to fill speaker requests on a variety of legal issues to audiences such as high school classes, libraries, and community organizations. Under the guidance of teacher Mary Mahepath, students are learning about topics such as bail reform in New York State, redistricting and election law, consumer law, cannabis and gaming law, and recent legal issues facing Nassau County. 
RED RIBBON WEEK
From October 24th—October 28th, Roslyn School District participated in Red Ribbon Week. This year’s theme was “Celebrate Life—Live Drug Free."
Each year, educators use the week to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Faculty, staff, and students were encouraged to wear red on Monday. For the rest of the week, each school published a schedule of different colors and themes to wear. Students also signed red banners, pledging to remain substance free.
Marching Bulldogs Win Two Championships!
On Sunday, October 30, 2022, the Roslyn Marching Bulldogs placed first in the Small School Division 2 category at the 2022 New York State Field Band Conference Championship—held at the JMA Wireless Dome Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. Their show, Immortalis, earned a score of 89.075. Over 170 Roslyn students participated in the competition, along with 12 staff members and 50 pit crew parents.

“This is the highest score that we’ve ever received!” said Band Director Frank Mauriello. “I’m so proud of our talented students. They worked very hard this season to elevate their performance and it is a joy to see them succeed. Kudos to our students and everyone involved in the show.”
The Marching Bulldogs also took first place in the USBands New York Regional Championships—held Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Lindenhurst High School. They received a top score of 90.9 in their group—the highest score of the day!
ATHLETICS
Congratulations to Ava Veneziano and Anika Tolat for placing 3rd in the Nassau County Tennis Invitational Championship at Eisenhower Park on October 15th and 16th. Both Ava and Anika received All County and All State honors for the third consecutive year!

They also placed 4th in the New York State Tennis Championship in Schenectady, NY.

FACILITES IMPROVEMENT
In October, work began at East Hills Elementary School on a new turf infield with drainage improvements and covered dugouts. The project includes the installation of spectator bleachers, new backstop fencing, and a batting cage. A scoreboard will also be installed on the gym wall.
In honor of National Board of Education Appreciation Week, Superintendent Allison Brown shared prepared remarks from several colleagues across the district at the October 13th BOE meeting. Ms. Brown also presented Roslyn Board of Education members with copies of Practical Wisdom—the staff and faculty book selection for this academic year.
