Are you ready? The "things to do" list is growing!

Soon the grounds at the Carrie Blast Furnaces will be as green as they are in this photo, which means our season of activities is about to kick into high gear!

Today at noon you can stop by the Bost Building for a gallery talk with Ron Baraff. It's also the last opportunity to see Memory Scenes: A Kathleen Ferri Retrospective. Don't miss it.

Then coming up in April, we have the first Photo Safari and Aluminum Casting Session workshops of the year. Check out these creative opportunities!

If hands on is not your style, the perhaps the Hardest Working River Tour will appeal to you. Offered just a few times each spring, this special three-hour excursion on the Explorer riverboat travels up the Mon River as far as Braddock while sharing the commercial and industrial history of the river over three centuries! The tours are happening a month from now, but historically they have sold out—so you might just want to get your tickets early!

Events are not all that we have to share today. Check out part two of Dr. Kirsten Paine's take on Jane Grey Swisshelm in this Women's History Month feature. Also, we're getting the word out about the upcoming deadline for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Folk & Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants. Plus, Rivers of Steel is hiring crew for the Explorer!

Join Rivers of Steel for a journey up the Monongahela River on the Explorer riverboat. Once known as the “Hardest Working River in the World,” the Mon, as it’s known to locals, was responsible for much of Pittsburgh’s early commercial and industrial success, even centuries before it earned that moniker.

Hop onboard for a three-hour tour that begins at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers, then travels to destinations upriver, in view of the Carrie Blast Furnaces and Edgar Thompson Works, and back again. Along the way, you’ll not only hear the stories of our region’s commercial and industrial heritage, you’ll have an opportunity to leisurely enjoy incredible views of the Mon River Valley as spring takes hold.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH FEATURE
Jane Swisshelm—Newspaper Woman!
To celebrate Women’s History Month, Rivers of Steel’s Interpretive Specialist, Dr. Kirsten Paine, crafted two articles on one of her favorite topics—Jane Grey Cannon Swisshelm. In part one of this twofer, Kirsten examined the life of this woman who was clearly ahead of her time through the lens of Swisshelm's autobiography. In today’s piece, she digs in further, focusing on Swisshelm’s career as a reporter, newspaper publisher, women’s rights advocate, and abolitionist throughout the nineteenth century.
Alex Brown, who previously received a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Apprenticeship grant, shares a message about how the opportunity.
