Ages: Everyone can help

Time Commitment: Stop by anytime between 3 – 5pm

We just completed a detailed census of people living in the San Diego Riverbed in the cities of San Diego and Santee. There are 320 people living in the riverbed! The count has dramatically increased since the start of the pandemic. We invite you to join us to help others in need, so hopefully they too will have a roof over their heads and a solid floor below them. People living in the riverbed can be the hardest to reach and when approached by public agencies often refuse services. Working with these agencies and homeless service provides like PATH San Diego, we know one of the first steps is building a relationship. One way of doing this is by creating care packages to distribute. Over several contacts some individuals will be ready to accept housing and other available services. Our goal is for no one to be living in the riverbed. When it rains, their lives are at risk as their encampments will be underwater. With cooler temperatures, the #1 need is socks. Will you join with us to donate 1 pair or more of adult socks? We will be collecting adult socks for any gender. We can also accept toiletries. If you are unable to drop off socks please consider making a $10+ donation and we will buy the socks for you, or buy socks on Amazon and have them delivered to our office. Learn more here.

I Love a Clean San Diego In-Person or Remote Cleanups

I Love a Clean San Diego

Date/Time: Check the I Love a Clean San Diego event calendar for December dates.

Location: Check the I Love a Clean San Diego event calendar for December locations.

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Join I Love A Clean San Diego! We will divert litter from traveling through the San Diego Bay watershed. Volunteers can participate in two ways: In-person with us at our meeting locations, or remotely in your own neighborhood.

In-Person Cleanups: Our staff will be set up with a check-in table, disposable supplies, and plenty of hand sanitizer at the cleanup meeting location.

  • Begin your event with a brief kick-off, sign a liability waiver, grab some disposable supplies, and help us clean up the area!
  • We can sort, weigh, and dispose of the litter you collect, and when you are finished, you can request a Letter of Appreciation through your Community Hub dashboard.
  • In-person cleanups are limited to 50 volunteers, and we ask that you give other volunteers 6+ ft. of space and wear a mask if you are unvaccinated.

Remote Cleanups: If you are not able to join us in person, join us remotely! Pick up litter around your neighborhood and report your totals online.

  • We will email you resources when you sign-up so you can watch our kick-off video before you start your cleanup.
  • Grab some reusable gloves and a bucket from around your house and go for a walk somewhere you want to make an impact.
  • Invite some friends to make it a neighborhood effort, and sort and dispose of litter in your household bins. Take a few photos and write down your litter totals.
  • When you are done, report your litter totals in our Volunteer Impact Map so we can verify your service, and go to your Community Hub dashboard to receive a Letter of Appreciation.
  • Please give other volunteers 6+ ft. of space and wear a mask if you are unvaccinated

Meals on Wheels San Diego County

Date/Time: Office hours vary. Please call any one of our regional offices.

Location: Deliver to any Meals on Wheels Service Center

Ages: Everyone can participate

We could not accomplish serving thousands of seniors every year without the help of our devoted volunteers. Sometimes a volunteer is the only person our clients see all day. During the holidays and for every birthday, Meals on Wheels and our community of generous volunteers provide our seniors with a special gift bag to say, "We Care." We Care Packages are small gift bags filled with useful and fun items. Bags can be assembled with a male or female in mind and can include a personal note of well-wishes. Click here for a list of suggested items to include in your gift bags. Volunteers are also welcome to create hand-written cards for our San Diego County seniors. Please refrain from making any religious and/or political messages in your cards. Your cards can be dropped off or mailed to any San Diego County service center.

Macy's Believe Campaign

Location: Online or at any Macy's retail store

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

This is the 13th year of Macy's Believe campaign benefiting Make-A-Wish. Your family can help make a child's wish come true! For every letter you send online or postcard you download and drop in a big red letterbox in-store, Macy's will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million, to create magical, life-changing experiences for terminally ill children and their families. During National Believe Week (November 28-December 4), Macy's is doubling their donation, giving $2 per letter, up to an additional $1 million. This brings the total campaign goal to $2 million! Since 2003, Macy's has donated over $157 million and helped grant over 16,000 wishes. With Macy's support, Make-A-Wish is committed to ensuring that no child waits even one unnecessary day to experience how a wish can encourage the belief in the impossible.

Add kindness to your holiday shopping experience. (And support a big-hearted nonprofit too!)

Our newly updated Shop Kind online store has gifts, games, books, apparel, kindness kits and more. Great for gift giving or for yourself! Visit often as we add items through Bookshop, the Amazon Associates program, and from independent vendors. The passive income we receive from sales, along with the small ad cost to DGT chosen vendors, helps our nonprofit as we in turn help busy browsers and buyers find goods that "do good" as well. (Disclaimer: we receive affiliate dollars and a small fee from the vendors to help support DGT.) Thank you!
