12:05-12:15Brian Andersen, M.D., Ph.D.

“Investigation of Astrocyte Glioblastoma Cell Interactions”

Brian Andersen, M.D., Ph.D. is a neuro-oncologist at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Jamaica Plain performing laboratory research with Dr. Francisco Quintana at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Brian earned his Bachelor’s of Arts in chemistry from Saint Olaf College before conducting post-baccalaureate laboratory research at the National Institutes of Health and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology as Fulbright Scholar. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D.) at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Ph.D in neuroscience under the mentorship of Drs. John Ohlfest and Michael Olin. Brian then completed internship and neurology residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, NY. Brian recently completed Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He joined the Quintana lab in August 2020, where he studies the biology of astrocytes and cellular interactions in the glioblastoma microenvironment.

12:15-12:25 – George K. Harrold, M.D.

“Clinical Research in Neuro-Infectious Diseases”

Kyle Harrold, M.D. is an Instructor in Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital where he specializes in neuro-infectious diseases. He completed the MGB neurology residency in 2021 followed by the advanced general and autoimmune neurology fellowship at MGH in 2022. His clinical practice includes any primary nervous system infection as well as neurological complications of chronic infectious diseases, particularly HIV. His research interests include the use of mogamulizumab to treat HTLV-1 associated myelopathy and characterizing Powassan virus, an emerging arboviral infection.

12:25-12:35 Frederic Schaper, M.D., Ph.D.

“Mapping lesion-related epilepsy to a human brain network”

Frederic Schaper, M.D. Ph.D. is an Instructor in Neurology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Assistant Scientist at the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics led by Dr. Michael Fox. He completed an M.D. Ph.D. in the Netherlands on deep brain stimulation for epilepsy and performed postdoctoral research on mapping brain networks at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Frederic's research focuses on mapping epilepsy networks to improve brain stimulation treatments for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Frederic’s research has been recognized through several grants and awards including the American Epilepsy Society Young Investigator Award, Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, and NIH-NINDS funding.

12:35-12:45Arati Tripathi, Ph.D.

“Nuclear Receptors: Unlocking a door to alpha-synucleinopathies”

Dr. Arati Tripathi is an Instructor in Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She received her undergraduate BSc (Honors) degree in Chemistry from St. Stephen’s College at University of Delhi, India, and Tripos in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, UK, as a Nehru Centenary Chevening Scholar. Dr. Tripathi performed her doctoral work at Princeton University focusing on how protein structure dictates its cellular function with particular emphasis on how vesicles dock and fuse with their target membranes. She joined the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases in 2018 where she is co-mentored by Drs. Ulf Dettmer and Dennis Selkoe. Her work focuses on understanding how alpha-synuclein structure impacts disease manifestation in Parkinson Disease with particular focus on identifying early intervention strategies and therapeutic targets for PD
