CEO MESSAGE
Wow! What a week for BC life sciences, congratulations all round and read below for the news. I am delighted to see that it’s also been a busy week for LSBC member, AbCellera. Not only has the company been recognised at the 2021 Technology Impact Awards, but CEO and founder, Dr. Carl Hansen has been named the EY Entrepreneur of the Year and also recognized for his leadership at this year’s prestigious BC Export Awards. Business in Vancouver notes that the company “is best known for its leading role in the Pandemic Prevention Platform which uses a proprietary technology program to develop “medical countermeasures within 60 days.” It is credited as one of the major breakthroughs in the pandemic.” Congratulations to Carl and to AbCellera.
I’m also delighted to see that LSBC Board member, Dr. Pieter Cullis has been recognized for his role in delivering COVID-19 vaccines to the world. Along with his collaborators, Pieter has been awarded the 2021 Prince Mahidol Award for Medicine. As he notes in this Globe and Mail interview, “It’s vital to keep people local … and I think we should be doing more to retain our talent in Canada. Countries that invest in their human capital are always going to do better.”

In terms of cultivating the next generation of skilled talent, BioTalent Canada has programs that can help. The SWPP and similar opportunities offer initiatives to increase the job-readiness of students registered in STEM, healthcare, business, and other programs at Canadian post-secondary institutions. They offer some great wage subsidy programs that cover the cost of a student’s salary by 75% to a maximum of $7,500. You can learn more in the links below:

Last week I introduced two of our four current SWPP co-op placements. This week I am pleased to give the final shoutout to Tav, our Events and Business Development Assistant, who compiles and formats our Events Newsletter each week, and Megan, our Sponsorship and Membership Assistant, who maintains our member accounts! Visit visit biotalent.ca/Co-opFunds for more details on the program.

BC Tech recently announced the winners of 2021 Technology Impact Awards. The gala returned to an in-person format this year, at Science World, while also broadcasting the event live to the tech community. Tyler Orton of Business in Vancouver wrote a fascinating piece on the 11 winners recognized at annual TIAs – mentioning specifically that unicorns took centre stage, including LSBC member, AbCellera winning the Company of the Year – Anchor Award. Our congratulations to all the winners and finalists, especially LSBC members Canexia Health (also finalists in the BC Export Awards), Thrive Health, STEMCELL Technologies, and Dr. Carl Hansen.

I’d like to congratulate Amplitude Ventures Partner and LSBC Board member, Nancy Harrison, who was awarded the PEAK 2020/2021 Excellence in Industry Award. Congratulations also to STEMCELL Technologies’ Founder, President & CEO – Dr. Allen Eaves on being named to the 2022 Business Laureates of B.C. Hall of Fame!

More congratulations—Sue Paish, CEO of the Digital Technology Supercluster, wins a CEO of the Year award in the Publicly Accountable category.

Also this week, Innovative Medicines Canada  introduced their new Chair - Cole Pinnow, President, Pfizer Canada ULC, has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors. I’m also sending congratulations to Microbiome Insights, who recently opened an office in in Ireland to better serve their European clients.

Wishing a happy 8th anniversary to Aspect Biosystems. LSBC looks forward to continuing to celebrate human health with you.

And finally, Giving Tuesday is next week – November 30. Please consider donating to the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation, as every dollar contributed on that day is being matched by a generous supporter. I also encourage you to support Movember – a cause to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health.
