Mosquito Prevention
Monsoon 2021 has brought more rain to the state than we've seen in recent years. But, with all the rain comes more mosquitoes. Health officials in Arizona are warning residents of a record high season for the West Nile Virus following the wetter monsoon.

Everyone is responsible for eliminating and preventing mosquito breeding on their property. Common mosquito breeding grounds are areas that have standing water including decorative ponds, fountains, bird baths, lakes, tires, buckets, and unmaintained swimming pools. Here are some helpful tips to prevent mosquitos from breeding:

  • Clear debris from property - wet leaves, yard waste, and other trash can be a breeding ground
  • Eliminate pools of stagnant water
  • Keep swimming pools treated and circulating
  • Check and eliminate places that accumulate water
  • Keep fountains operating or drain the water
  • Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets
  • Empty water from outdoor containers, old tires, tarps, and unused swimming pools
  • Turn outdoor buckets and containers upside down to prevent water form accumulating
  • Install yellow light bulbs in outdoor lamps - mosquitoes are not attracted to yellow light
  • Limit outdoor activity after sunset - mosquitoes are most active at night
  • Repair window screens - these are effective barriers against mosquitoes entering the home
  • Keep doors closed
  • Use insecticides sparingly and carefully - read label instructions carefully
  • Wear insect repellents

If you are experiencing problems with Mosquitos, contact the Maricopa County Vector Control Department at 602-506-0700 or visit their website: https://www.maricopa.gov/632/Vector-Control The county monitors hundreds of routine areas that have been identified as problem areas or mosquito-breeding sites and deploys mosquito traps to these areas every week and also provides a calendar of areas to be sprayed/fogged.

Walk It Out with Nine O'Clock Walk!
Sleep soundly by knowing you’ve taken steps to prevent crime and reduce its impact within your neighborhood.

Routinely walk your property by the end of the night to check your mailbox, remove valuables and secure your vehicle in the driveway, and lock up the windows and doors leading into your house before setting your alarm to stay mode. These routines complete the #NineOClockWalk and are the best steps in helping us all sleep better at night.

Community Resource Officer Steven McGhee shared, “If each resident can take actions every night to address these particular areas of concern, we will not only remove the opportunity for crime, but we can prevent it altogether. As more of these actions are proactively taken by residents, the ease of committing these types of offenses becomes diverted to the point where the offenders are forced elsewhere. Simply put, the Nine O’Clock Walk can end crime by walking it out.”

Marley is 3!
Marley is a labradoodle who was trained as a therapy dog by PV employee John Carver and his wife Katie, and he just turned 3 years old in September!

Katie is a high school teacher in the East Valley. Marley goes with her to school everyday to help students that are having a tough time in life or to just visit and ease stress.

Moved by the number of teen suicides, some at Katie's school, Katie and John came up with this idea to have a therapy dog in class to help ease some stress at school. Marley has been well received and has made a significant impact at school of over 3000 students. Marley is pictured above with some of the students. He also received a full page in last year's school yearbook and lots of Zoom time with the students during the COVID shutdown. The students actually looked forward to visiting with their teacher and Marley (or maybe it was just Marley😊).

Marley also visits Mayo Hospital to provide comfort and smiles to patients.

September was Suicide Prevention Month so it is fitting that Marley celebrates a birthday at this time. If you or anyone you know is suicidal, we encourage you to call the National Suicide Hotline at 800-273-8255 or visit their website at https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/.
