Chamber to Launch Junior Leadership Torrance Program

Following the format of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Torrance program, the chamber will launch a Junior Leadership Torrance program this fall. Under the direction of Directors, Leslie Cortez and Assistant Fire Chief Bill Samp and Vice Chair Foundation, Jennifer Olvera, this program will include sophomore students from the Torrance Unified School District.

“I am excited to lead this new program that has been designed to familiarize young leaders with the various elements that form a strong and dynamic community. Junior Leadership Torrance will help students develop leadership skills and foster their interest in volunteer community service. I am most excited about guiding the participants through the day in the life of Torrance-past, present and future.  Students will learn key fundamentals of the City and County, as well as state government,” explained Cortez.

This new program will be featured at Summer Fest on August 20th. Summer Fest is an event that will be held in front of the Depot Restaurant in Downtown Torrance. Guests will be provided a BBQ buffet, hosted bar and an opportunity to listen to live music. All donations are tax deductible; the TACC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. For information, please contact (310)540-5858.

Volunteers Needed for International Surf Festival!

The International Surf Festival is seeking volunteers on the following dates and times; as local lifeguards compete on the North side of Hermosa Beach Pier.

Dates: Fri., Aug. 4th & Sat., Aug. 5th

Volunteer Check-In Time: 6:45pm

Event/Volunteer Time: 7pm-10pm

At check-in, volunteers will be assigned to supervise an individual lane near the front of the course (best seat in the house!). Volunteers will make sure that the relay exchanges happen behind the line, and update the lane counters at each lap to help the spectators keep better track as the race progresses.

The lifeguard events are very unique to the International Surf Festival, and volunteers may sign up for one night or both nights. Volunteers receive an official International Surf Festival t-shirt & organizers promise a fun, low-pressure and memorable experience!

How to sign up to volunteer: Email Gary Crum at pier2pier_swim@verizon.net. Please include that you’re a member of the Torrance Chamber, your contact phone number, which night(s) you’d prefer to volunteer, and your t-shirt size.
