Fair Winds and Following Seas
As most of you know as of October 1st, Archbishop Hebda appointed me to exercise my diaconate ministry at the Church and Parish of the Guardian Angels. Since October 1st, I have been transitioning from Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Guardian Angels. This weekend, October 29th and 30th, is the last time I will assist at Mass here at Presentation of Mary (as the assigned deacon).

Since my ordination to the diaconate on December 4, 2021, I have been here at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on a teaching parish assignment. This has been a great opportunity. It has allowed me to learn and grow in comfortable and familiar surroundings.

I have grown up here at Presentation. I have grown physically to adulthood by, as a boy attending school here, getting married here, and raising my family here. But I’ve also grown and matured spiritually as a deacon here over the last 10 months. Everyone here at Presentation has been incredibly supportive of me and my ministry. For this I will be forever grateful. I mean that sincerely, I have been overwhelmed by the love, friendship, and encouragement that everyone has shown me.

Within the navy, there is a tradition to wish a departing sailor “fair winds and following seas”. This saying goes back to the days of the sailing ships where fair winds were those winds that filled the sails and matched the direction of the sailing ship. Following seas were waves that did the same thing. To wish someone fair winds and following seas is to wish them a smooth and successful sailing trip.

In the gospel, Zacchaeus is led by the Holy Spirit to seek Jesus, only Jesus turns the tables on him and calls him by name, “Zacchaeus, come quickly, today I must stay at your house”. If we open our hearts to the guidance of the same Holy Spirit, we will be guided, by the breath of the Spirit, to hear Jesus call us by name and ask to stay with us.

In the second reading, Paul tells the Thessalonians that his prayer for them is that God may make them worthy of his calling, so that the name of Jesus may be glorified.

My prayer for you is, that God would fill the sails of your soul with the gentle winds of the Holy Spirit to lead you to the shores of His heavenly kingdom. May the waves of this life be small and gentle, and may our Mother Mary, the star of the sea, be your guiding light on your way to union with Jesus. May everything you do begin with God and continue with His saving help.

May our loving heavenly Father help everyone to find the fair winds and following seas that lead to the bosom of His Infinite Love. You are always in my prayers.
God bless you all.
-Deacon Michael Braun

A note from Fr Peter:
You may have noticed that there was not a "farewell" reception planned for Deacon Mike Braun because he and Debbie will still remain parishioners here at Presentation of Mary and will both still be active in the parish life as they are able to. So we don't want to "send them off" away from our parish family.

BUT, if you would like to send him a note to thank him for his "assigned" time here as a deacon and in the ways that he was able to serve in that capacity, I would strongly encourage you to do so, especially to let him know of your prayers for both he and Debbie that their ministry at Guardian Angels will continue the work of bringing all of God's people back to Himself through Jesus.

Feel free to email to him directly or send/drop off a card at the Parish Center where they can pick it up: dcnbraun@ufamily.net
