Land Use Planning for Climate Change

September 30, 2022 | 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (Webinar)

Vermont’s Climate Action Plan calls for an all hands approach and identifies a wide range of actions that municipalities can lead on, especially with respect to our pattern of land use and how that affects both mitigation and adaptation. It can be overwhelming to understand where to begin and what tools might be most helpful. In this session, participants will learn about a range of land use planning tools that can be used to address climate change and some examples of how they’ve been employed.

Presenters: Ann Janda, Senior Energy Project Manager, Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission & Jens Hilke, Conservation Planner, VT Fish and Wildlife Department

In June 2022 HUD announced the Continuum of Care (CoC) Program Supplemental Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to Address Unsheltered and Rural Homelessness (Special NOFO), which makes $322 million in competitive funding available to communities to address unsheltered and rural homelessness. This funding opportunity includes a $54.5 million set aside for communities in rural areas.

CoCs will need to demonstrate a comprehensive community approach to reduce homelessness among people experiencing homelessness with severe service needs, especially those with histories of unsheltered homelessness.  Applications must be submitted by October 20, 2022, at 8:00 PM EDT. For more information about this Special NOFO please visit HUD’s Special NOFO site.

This webinar with HUD is to discuss this funding opportunity as well as other ways to work with CoCs to address homelessness in your communities.

FY 23 Municipal Planning Grants Due December 1

Vermont’s communities, with unprecedented funding opportunities currently available, have a unique opportunity to help bring new life and vision to their towns. The State’s flexible Municipal Planning Grants are ready to support projects for long-term recovery, and now is the time to begin thinking about projects. For more than 30 years, Municipal Planning Grants have helped communities like yours implement town plan recommendations and jump start initiatives like zoning updates to welcome new homes, plans for a state designated area, or economic recovery strategies.

Individual towns may apply for up to $26,400 and joint applications from several municipalities (a consortium) may apply for up to $39,600.  A wide range of municipal planning and implementation activities are eligible for funding with a small local match of 10%. I encourage you to reach out to stakeholders now to discuss local needs, opportunities, and strategies for adaptation and change.

Please review the Program Description for eligibility requirements and application guidelines. Even the smallest Vermont towns can write a winning application and open doors to a better future.
