Featured: Who Will Answer the Call? An Abstract of Challenges Facing Michigan's Rural EMS Agencies

EMS agencies – both rural and urban – throughout Michigan are facing common hardships in many of the same discussion points, but what exacerbates them in rural environments are the geography, population volumes, and the overall access to care for its citizens. Each of these factors affects the EMS system, agency recruitment efforts, and provider retention initiatives within Michigan’s rural EMS agencies in ways that urban areas can relate to, but not directly compare.

This document is the result of years of work by the Rural EMS Subcommittee of Michigan’s Emergency Medical Services Coordination Committee (EMSCC). In September of 2021 it was reviewed by the EMSCC and submitted to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for distribution to stakeholders and concerned residents.

Emergency Rural Health Care Grant Program

Introduction: This program is designed to help broaden access to COVID-19 testing and vaccines, rural healthcare services, and food assistance through food banks and food distribution facilities. This program offers two tracks of funding:

Track One: Recovery Grants provide immediate relief to address the economic conditions arising from the COVID-19 emergency. Grant funds must be used in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and to support immediate health care needs, to help prepare for a future pandemic event, or to increase access to quality health care services and improve community health outcomes. Grant awards range from $25,000 - $1 million.
Track Two: Impact Grants advance ideas and solutions to solve regional rural health care problems to support the long-term sustainability of rural health care. Long-term sustainability is defined as “improved health outcomes, improved access to quality health care, and creating and maintaining sustainable economic development for small communities.” Grant funds must be used in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grant awards range from $5 million - $10 million.

3RNET Academy Retention Strategies

The Michigan Center for Rural Health is pleased to offer the opportunity to attend the 2021 3RNET Academy: Retention Strategies: Saving Money and Fostering Quality through Workforce Engagement free of charge. The 3RNET Academy provides engaging content designed to inform rural healthcare leadership in Administration/HR/Recruiting/Retention.

This year’s agenda includes sessions on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, behavioral interviewing, stay interviews, strengthening employee engagement, clinician well-being/resilience and much more. All sessions are live via webinar, recorded for later viewing, and occur every two weeks starting 10/5 to 12/14 at 2:30 pm.
