Growing Plants, Growing People

Colorado Master Gardener (CMG) volunteer applications are open now through Oct. 16. If you’ve been thinking about joining this statewide program, here is what you can expect.

Great Training from CSU Specialists
After acceptance into the CMG program, you’ll begin 10 weeks of training, primarily online, about Colorado’s unique climate, soils, plants and ecosystems. Training begins in January 2023 and includes both self-paced lessons and interactive sessions. Check out the syllabus to learn more about the training schedule and policies. You can also opt to take this training without a volunteer commitment by enrolling in Green School.

A Year of Learning from Your Peers
After successfully completing training, you’ll begin your apprentice year, where you engage in local volunteer projects while learning from experienced volunteers and Extension staff. You’ll complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer time over the course of the season and have a wide array of in-person, virtual, interactive and self-paced volunteer projects to choose from.

Providing Education and Outreach to Your Community
The mission of the Colorado Master Gardener program is to enhance Coloradans’ quality of life by:
  • Extending knowledge-based education throughout Colorado communities to foster successful gardeners;
  • Helping individuals make informed decisions about plants to protect neighborhood environments.
This can take many forms: answering home gardener questions, maintaining educational gardens, teaching community classes, and writing for media, just to name a few!
And will you make a difference? You bet! Learn more about CMG volunteer impact in the annual program reports.
